View Full Version : Connecting a Pocket PC to the internet

Hi all -

I'm having trouble setting up my other half's rinky-dink new Pocket PC (an HP iPAQ 2210).

It seems to me that I should be able to use Bluetooth to surf the web and pick up emails, and so on (actually the emails are okay since I guess they'll be picked up and sent when it syncs).

So the problem is getting connected to the internet.

The Bluetooth stuff seems to work okay; I can see files on the host PC and all that sort of thing.

When I try to connect to the internet it says "Unable to connect: You have no modem entries created, and no network card present".

Fair enough... So I go to the Settings link that is kindly offered, and then the "Advanced" tab. I see three buttons: One for "Network Card" - "Select what your network card connects to". Tap that - I get "My network card connects to: " and a bunch of adapters; one of which is the Bluetooth PAN User Driver.

Tap that, and set up an IP address. Makes no difference.

All the other settings appear to imply that I can only connect by using the modem to dial up. I don't want to do that.

The other bit of info is that the host PC is connecting to the internet via a router - that might have an effect. The Host PC has the router connection set up for internet sharing (specifically for this new Pocket PC).

Is this insoluble? Have I misunderstood what is possible?

Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong or a suggestion of a new direction would be gratefully received!

Perhaps I'm misuncerstanding your question. Bluetooth is for short range wireless connection. If you want to use the PocketPC with a wireless LAN or to talk to another wireless device, you need to get something like this:

And maybe check this out:

Otherwise, since you mentioned the Host PC, I'm guessing that you are trying to access the internet through the PC, which you should be able to do through ActiveSync from File > Connection Settings... > and check the box that says "allow Ethernet and RAS blah blah blah".

Thanks - time for more tinkering, then!

Do you have to have Bluetooth to connect to the web? I thought it was only to connect with other Bluetooth devices like, say cell phones and the like.

Well, you can use it for those things. I had high hopes that I might be able to use it to connect to the web as well, by sharing my Bluetooth-enabled main PC's connection. But it seems highly resistant!

I've made some progress by nearly persuading it to connect to ActiveSync across Bluetooth. (Nearly, but not quite). But it's a start.

WoooHoooo!

I have done it :D:D:D:D

[happy dance]

I can even connect to my router to get it to dial for me.

[lap of honour around room]

Web based email no problem.

[further happy dancing]

I've got to get one of these for myself.

WoooHooo again!

I tell you this: these things are sometimes unnecessarily difficult to get sorted out, but it does feel good when you solve 'em. The assumption is, though, that many folk would have given up a couple of weeks ago.

Perhaps you should have done the obvious thing, and referred to TRSoTTTWND, specifically to this post. (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&postid=1870218698#post1870218698) The answers to most every question can be found in there somewhere. :)
