AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Two Dutch political parties called Wednesday for laws prohibiting sex with animals after a man suspected of having sex with a pony was set free.
Wearing nothing but a T-shirt, the man was arrested by police in Utrecht Monday after the pony's owner caught him by surprise in his stable.
"He was caught in the stable, busy with the pony, and was arrested for animal mistreatment," Mary Hallebeek, a prosecution spokeswoman said.
This kind of shoots a hole in the "gay marriage will lead to bestiality" argument.

Presumably the Dutch never bothered to prohibit it. Or was it previously illegal and then legalized?

LIAR!!! It PROVES the argument. USA is MOCKING GOD by allowing SODOMITES to marry and this is what happens when we MOCK GOD. People think they can do whatever they want and not just what JESUS TELLS US TO DO.
-praying-
Dutch people DO DRUGS and SELL PORNOGRAPHY and now they try to act suprised that people IGNORE GOD and have SEX WITH ANIMALS. How clear does it have to get before you WHINEY LIBERALS see that if we let the ACLU make us marry SODOMITES that pretty soon you wont be able to buy a steak without some GODLESS FREAK trying to SATISFY HIS PERVERTED URGES with it!!! Do we want to be like the DUTCH? The BIBLE SAYS doors are to be ONE PIECE. Those double doors are a MARK OF SATAN designed to help the EVIL DUTCH satisfy their PERVERTED URGES with their pets.
-praying-
Good AMERICANS know that GOD MADE ADAM AND EVE NOT ADAM AND STEVE and don't try to spread the LIE that SODOMITES aren't dangerous. HITLER WAS A SODOMITE and so was BILL CLINTON!!! One of these people tried to DESTROY AMERICA and the other was some GERMAN!!! AMERICA was created by JESUS to SERVE GOD's WILL and not to be a HOME for PEOPLE THAT MOCK GOD!!!

I always wondered the logic of it's legal to kill an animal, use the remains for clothes and tools but not have sex with it. Anybody want to explain that one to me?

Not sure about logic, but the Bible seems to come out against bestiality (whereas it is fairly equivocal on rape, slavery and murder). I don't believe that prohibitions against bestiality have much to do with protecting the animal; rather than bestiality as a sexual practise is seen as wrong, or against God, or just generally "immoral" in some ill-defined-but-everyone-knows-it-so-it-must-be-true way.

So take the Bible out of the "equation" and everyone can screw a pony?

Time to play devildogs advocate.
was he really "abusing" the animal? Its not like th pony is suffereing emotial scars. Is he even physically hurting the animal? Wouldnt the animal defend himself if he was being hurt?
We can whip animals somewhat, have tehm toil in the fields, clip their ears, use choke chains. THats all fine. But give them a little lovin and thats bad!?!?

I was taught when "tending" sheep, to tie a bow around your favourite. That way you won't have to, errr, process the whole flock to find your favourite.

I'll take "most embarrasing moment in history" for $500, Alex.
(Reminds me of a Tom Lehrer monologue: "he majored in animal husbandry... until they caught him at it one day.")

Well you can penetrate any place you go
Yes, you can penetrate any place you go
I told you so..."

Sheep humour (?)...
Stranger: Why's that cute one alone?
Local dude: That's the sheriff's girl.
Bumper sticker seen in rural Idaho: "Hippies are living proof that cowboys f*** sheep"
(I suppose "rural Idaho" is redundant)

It is also illegal to physically abuse or mistreat an animal, and I'm guessing that there are regulations that specify how an animal may be killed.

But as Tony pointed out how animals can be treated tends make the definition of abuse very vague.

Hey man, that sheep was prancing around, naked, on all fours, in that part of the barn at that time of night. She was askin for it!
If the animal isnt hurt is it ok? Have you ever seen them horse porn clips?

Exactly! How do we know if the pony was:
1. of age (I believe it's 13 or 14 there)?
2. drugged with roofies?
3. actually going steady with the guy?
4. a FEMALE?
...Actually, I'm just waiting for Rouser to come in here and explain to all of us how the Pony had it coming and only has itself to blame.

I would think it does speak against beastiality to protect the animal. Not out of any humanitarian/animal rights kind of thinking. When you make your living farming in a rather inhospitable land, your livestock is your livelyhood. Someone damaging your livestock by getting busy with it can seriously affect your life.

You think some schmoe could do more "damage" than another pony? Dude, you're giving the Dutch waaaaaay too much credit.

Yeah. At least he's not a homo. :p
Seriously, I still want to know when the Dutch legalized bestiality. Or was it always legal?

I am talking about the bible here, not Dutch law. The hebrews were sheep and goat hearders, much easier to hurt than a pony.

I wonder why they're focusing on the bestiality and not on the fact that the guy was (according to my reading) trespassing.

Pardon me, apparently I'm not as familiar with the intricacies of bestiality as you are. I'll defer to your expertise...:D
Believe you me, Biblical doctrine has absolutely nothing to do with the way laws are written and administered in the Netherlands... or perhaps I could better call it the Nether Regions? Either way I'd be shocked if it's even a misdemeanor there.

Well I think that the spread of christianity has a little something to do with the existance of some laws in areas. Ok, this one might be based just on the Ick factor.

My serious question still has not been answered. There is no doubt in my mind that at one time bestiality was a death penalty offense in the Netherlands, as in the rest of Christian Europe.
OK, it's not Christian Europe anymore, and there is no death penatly. I got that part.
So when did they legalize bestiality?
Or did they just neglect to prohibit it when the current legal system was set up (after WWII, maybe)? That could also be ick factor. It's just too icky even to think about.

I remember in college doing some research and saw an article, might have been on the Dutch. It talked about how the country got rid of all obscenity laws. Right after that there was a big spike in porn sales in the country, but it eventually tapered away. With all this naughty stuff no longer illegal it lost some of it's appeal, and people realized that some of the films were pretty darn boring to watch after a while. A large part of the porn sales are now from forigners looking to get what they can't get at home.
