Ladewig,

I had the same question...

I believe we were to go here. (http://www.islam.tc/ask-imam/index.php)

There under March 10 I found the answer...

The use of emotional signs, for example, smile, sad, etc. in a cellphone falls in the category of animate pictures.

It is prohibited to make use of such emotional signs in a cellphone.

This really is a great site for concerned young muslims today. There are so many troubling questions in our modern day world that it is good to find a place giving clear answers.

A couple others I liked...

Q: What does Islam say about white magic such as real magic done for entertainment or for altering physical apperances? such as levitation, or invisibility spells?

A: White magic for entertainment, etc. falls in the category of Lahw and La’ab (futile and useless) acts which is prohibited.

Q: Is it allowed to marry your mother’s cousin? I am a young female (15 years) and I really, really like my so called “uncle” (25 years). And is my mother’s real uncle (her mother’s brother) my mahram?

A: Your mother’s cousin (your cousin Uncle) is not your Mahram. It is permissible to marry him.

Your maternal grandmother’s brother (mother’s mother’s brother) is your Mahram. You cannot marry him.

My bad, sorry. Didn't cut properly after my previous post 'The best autobiography', but the next poster corrected the link. I'd edit it now, but it's too late under current forum rules.
