In this post here (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&postid=1870356020#post1870356020) fidelio provides a link to an amazing picture of deep space.

The .jpg of the original can be downloaded, it's 60megs and 6200 X 6200.

Here (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2004/07/)is a link to a smaller version of the pic.

Is there a program anyone can suggest that would help view this? Most programs just seem to crash for me when I try to get it to load the file (like IE, Opera, upaint).

It would be amazing to be able to view the file in full size and 'scroll around' looking at various spots. As well as view it at screen size or smaller and zoom in at various spots.

Any suggestions?

Adam

Thanks crapmike! Haven't seen you around here much lately...

But that program works like a charm, loaded up the jpg in just a few seconds for me.

What a spectacular picture!

And thanks to Skeptoid for providing the link for the full picture.

Adam,

I figured Irfanview would do the trick. I use it all the time. It has a bajillion features and it's easy to use. And it's free. I never pass up a chance to recommend it but crapmike beat me to it this time. :)

Let me know if you think it's worth a 4hr+ download (I'm on a dial-up ISP).

I'm really impressed with Infraview. I like it :)

Now, is it worth a four hour d/l.... I'd say yes if you're interested in space pictures normally. For instance I have about 50 images downloaded from the Astronomy Picture of the Day sight which I really like and switch around (amongst other images) as my desktop.

I've spent about 20 mins just looking it over, scrolling up and down, back and forth. The detail is pretty amazing, looking at some of the galaxies it's amazing to think that's how they really look.....

So ya, I'd say it's worth it basically :D

I tried viewing it in various sizes and mostly I just like the full version, though it is nice to make it full screen and see the whole picture.

Cool, I've been using it for some time now.

I like the slide show feature.

I'm trying to load it in my browser now. The first inch at the top of the pic has appeared, but now seems to be stuck . . . hmmmm. Also my 19 inch monitor only getting the first 1/5th of the width of the pic! Hope I can get the damn pic. I agree it would be amazing to do as you say :)

BTW, what's the difference between the TIFF version and the JPEG version? The TIFF is about 110 MB I think!

The TIFF is an uncompressed format that is popular for high-quality printing.

If you're just going to view it on your monitor, then just download the jpg.

Boy, Skeptoid, you're a regular graphics guru.

I know who I'm gonna pm the next time I've got a question.

I'd suggest getting the Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) program recommended earlier. If you download the picture from the site to your hard drive, it will load it in just a few seconds. You can easily scroll around the picture with the scroll bars and zoom in and out and various points.

I'll say it again, great pic!

Yeah, I downloaded it. It's excellent. Don't think I need that program though because I can do all that with ACDSee.

50?... That's nothin'. I got about 220 of those pix in my HD. I love 'em!

I just finished downloading it, and all I can say is WOW!
