Purported al Qaeda letter calls truce in Spain
Wed 17 March, 2004 20:15

CAIRO (Reuters) - A group claiming to have links with al Qaeda says it is calling a truce in its Spanish operations to see if the new government will withdraw its troops from Iraq, a pan-Arab newspaper says.

In a statement sent on Wednesday to the Arabic language daily al-Hayat, the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the Madrid bombings that killed 201 people, also urged its European units to stop all operations.

"Because of this decision, the leadership has decided to stop all operations within the Spanish territories... until we know the intentions of the new government that has promised to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq," the statement said.

It wasn't, 'Al Qaeda have ties to Iraq', it was, 'Al Qaeda have ties to Saddam'. Now that Saddam has gone, they are possibly trying to start a power base in Iraq.

Now go start some threads on Kerry. The adults are trying to talk.

Edit: Clarity.

Despite that it's glaringly obvious...

Sure, there may be ties NOW, as a result of the war.

Yeah. I suported the war, but it's pretty clear that there were no real ties between OBL and Saddam.

NTW is just repeating Rush's failed logic. Rush Limbaugh was saying this yesterday on his show. It can't be coincidence that NTW happens to repeat it today.

I laughed as Rush tried to use this as proof that Al Qaeda was involved in Iraq. LOL

Ah, c'mon Trinky, don't run away now. STICK UP FOR YOUR OPINIONS! Surely you have a counter-response? Surprise me for once. Stick up for what you believe in. Otherwise you just look boring.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, using my psychic powers, to predict that NTW will attempt to make fun of everyone's replies, call us all names, and not support his assertion.

Let's watch and see...

Saddam has supported terror and suicide bombing for a long time.

it'll take years for socialists like yourselves to even admit that he has mass graves and funded such things.

I think you'll find that's a strawman. Unless you can find somewhere where I said Saddam was way-cool and the accusations about him were all so much spin.

The problem we socialists have is that Saddam was supported by the American government while he was committing many of these atrocities. It can make one mistrust the motives of the government when they suddenly use them as a <strike>pretext</strike> reason for invasion.

Waaaait a sec. Where's the link for that article, NTW? I'm in the troubling position of, as a poster, wondering if you made it up or, as a moderator, wondering if I have a copyright infringement to edit.

Which is it?

Just so I don't misconstrue your meaning, are you saying that A-Q just kill for the sake of it, with no reason for their targets?

May I call you "Sean"?

If NTW (or anyone else) is actually interested in finding out how Al Qaeda has become decentralized, wide-spread, and has linked with several other terrorist groups since the war, then I suggest that they listen to the excellent interview that was recently on NPR.

http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1771429

Al Qaeda Involvement in Madrid Bombing
NPR's Michele Norris talks with Jessica Stern, a lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and author of Terror in the Name of God, about the bombings in Madrid, the al Qaeda connection, and the current state of al Qaeda.
