View Full Version : Help me steal that one song...

That one German song! You know, that one. All the words, if I recall correctly (this is one of those rare cases where I might be slightly wrong) are in, yep, German. I know it's a chick singing. My guess is circa 1988, but that's a weak, ill-informed guess. It has a poppy flavor...
This, uh, isn't for me. It's, uh, for someone else. Like seriously. Totally.
I can try to be more vague if that's too help. If anyone can recommend any other cheesy (and I mean really, really cheesy) popular 80s German songs/bands, it would be much appreciated.
So far I only have the song previously mentioned (see detailed description above) and Falco's "Rock Me, Amadeus".

Nena, 99 luftballons?
Here you can find the lyrics in German and English. (http://members.aol.com/Oxym0r0n99/nena.html)
I quite like the song, by the way.

Sorry, but Falco was Austrian.

I know Nena recorded it herself but 99 Luftballons lost a lot in translation. I like it too, in the original version that is. By the way she is out touring again together with her English look/sound-alike Kim Wilde, could be interesting to see those two together.;)

I know, and they made a song together (you just reminded me of it, and I am whistling it right now...and we belong...together we belong...anywhere, anyplace, anyhow...)
I am aware that it is cheesy europop, but I cannot help liking it.

And on a related note, is the English "Der Kommisar" a translation of the German "Der Kommisar" or do they just make it up?

Man, I was so close. After some fruitless google searching I turned to amazon and searched for "Falco". Then I clicked on what other users purchased and Nena came up. But that particular album didn't have any sample sound files.
99 Luftballoons was the correct tune.
Sorry, but Falco was Austrian.
Same difference. He's dead anyway.

The group Goldfinger did a cover of the english version called 99 red balloons. (The German version by Nina was the best, followed by the Goldfinger english version then Nina's english version if I were to rank them.)

I can't really make my mind up if you are kiddin' or what but anyway: "Kommisar" IS a title in the German Police and "Der Kommisar" was the title of a (very good) German TV crime series. The one forgiving thing about German TV is ther Crime series, they have allways been good: "Der Alte" - "Tatort" and the above mentioned.;) (AND they are partly the cause of my ability to understand and speak German:D )

No, I am not kidding.
In the late 80's, Falco had a hit song called "Der Kommisar"
Which was him doing his rap-talk thing and a chorus that went:
"Don't turn around Uh ooh ooh, Der Kommisar (Something German), Uh ooh ooh"
And then there was a remake that was a hit in America by a band called "After the Fire".
I am wondering if After the Fire actually translated what Falco was rapping, or just came up with lyrics of their own, my German was never good enough to tell.
When I was living in Germany in 92, People were surprised that I knew these 2 Deutsch Schlag songs, Der Kommisar and 99 Luftballoons. Most didn't know that they were hits in the US and part of the Pop vocabulary.

Yep,pure, blame America propaganda!I'd expect nothing less from the Germans. That's basically the thinking/message isn't it?It was,I believe, a song opposing Reagans placement of Persing missiles in Europe?Let's appease them...that would be much better...isn't that the real mesage?...LOL..didn't work!!HA,HA!!Reagan was right!

Heh, heh. I remember that video. MTV (an American cable TV station that used to show music videos long ago), loved to freeze-frame the part where she threw her arms into the air and then splice that into their mini-promos. I guess they thought she was a freak or something. For a station that considered itself a pioneer, they were so provincial.
I still have the hots for Ms. Nena Kerner. She could really make the German language sound sexy. "Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann..." Yeah.

Seems pretty much the same, Thanks.
Isin't the Kommisar the subway cop that checks your tickets? That's what I was told.

No as far as i know "Kommissar" is a rank title in the German police. He would have the same rank as Furillo in "Hill Street Blues" i think. BUT the East German variant vas much more the "J.Edgar Hoover-prying-into-peoples-lives" type of policeman and it may be from there the song got it's title.

The english lyrics for 99 luftballoons are TOTALLY different!
Not even close to each other. I guess they were just re-written.
