View Full Version : The Anti-TAM

I received an email today (targeted? Ironically, perhaps) advertising a paranormal convention this winter. It is essentially the anti-TAM, promoting everything the JREF (and I personally) have sworn to fight.

Read all about it (http://www.theunconventionalconvention.com). It's worth reading just for the topics list (http://www.theunconventionalconvention.com/categories.htm). It's a who's who of woo woo.

Sweet. I wonder if the University would fund my going to this, like they did for TAM2. I would go in an instant.*

Phil (Bad-ast)--are you gonna go? C'mon...we can share room costs...

did we do "gambling & skepticism" at TAM2? Maybe we should at TAM3!

Wouldn't it be great if TAM and anti TAM were held at the same time at the same hotel? It would have some great slapstick moments as non-skeptics would find themselves at the wrong lectures and the other way around.

They have zoology on the list of topics????

Cool, zombies as well.

Ed,

I'd take that bet. You know how much money purveyors of nonsense make at these things? Every Past Life guru, Atlantean Advisor, Alien Abductee, Quartz Crystal Healer, Ghost Hunter, and psychics of all ilks show up to hawk their books and other wares to the credulous. It's quite a thing to see, and sadly I have seen more than a few of these events on local or national news programs or on programs about the paranormal on "educational" channels. They usually seem quite well attended.

You know, the funny thing is, everytime I see one of these events profiled and they interview the participants I almost always end up feeling sorry for them all... inspite of myself.

This is where the first battle in the war between science and nonsense will be fought! Skeptics be prepared to fight!

Woulc it be possible for a skeptic to sneak in there, pretending to do a woo-woo workshop, and actually try and teach some critical thinking...?

Some of the things on the topic list I wouldn't classify as in that area, and some I maybe would depending on specifically how they view it, for example, "fitness".
