A new study (www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993472) suggests that the children of single mothers haven't suffered due to changes in welfare laws obliging their mothers to work. In the case of adolescents, they may even have benefited.
Household income increased, and it's also suggested that a positive effect accrues from the increased self-esteem that results from leaving the welfare rolls and entering employment. OTOH the point is made that the study was done at a time when jop opportunities were plentiful.
