View Full Version : Why would forum posts go s l o w ?

I have 2 computers which I use to access this forum.
Hardware specs are similar. One is an HP (Vista), one a Dell.(Win7)

On the HP of late I find composing a post gets slower the longer I'm on this forum. After an hour, I'm down to about 1 character per second.
If I log off and on again, the problem goes away, then restarts.

On the Dell, on the same ADSL link, there's no sign of this.

I have scanned the HP with Mawarebytes, Windows Security Essentials and Avanquest's Systemsuite 11. None of them find any malware beyond the odd cookie. (Nb, only MSE is permanently installed).

Any suggestions why this might be?

ETA- I do not see this on any other website.

I think that is to do with the computer rather than the forum. Typing in a post is handled by the computer. It is only when you click on the buttons and links that you are sending anything to or receiving anything from the forum.

I suggest you use Chrome as the browser. What one do you use? If IE that may be the problem. At least see if the problem exists using Chrome. Other things to check

- Delete the cache
- Defrag the computer.

When it's running slow open up your task manager and look for any applications or processes that are taking up a lot of CPU or memory.

This happened to me this morning. I ran into the slow processing when I tried to post or tried to open a new thread, but not while typing. I'm using non-secured Internet access so it won't surprise me if an unknown party is hogging the line and shutting down my access. I need to set up the security ASAP. Also, my internet provider got little pissy with my husband's business account (He moved his office over the Memorial weekend and had internet connectivity issues ever since) and shut down my home account two days ago.

I got back my access late in the afternoon yesterday. Will see what happens next.

To help troubleshoot, is the slowdown limited to browsing? As in, can you open and work on a (gag) Word document for example?

It could be a program (like IE or a different one) that has a memory leak which could explain initial zippy response with a slowing down over the course of a period of time which seems resolved upon a restart or logoff/logon.

A different browser other than IE could also help or the most recent version of IE if you are particularly attached to it.

At any rate, do what WildCat suggested when you first boot up the computer and take note (even if just a mental note) of what programs are running and at what approximate percentage of CPU and cache they are taking. Do this again after an hour or whenever you notice the slow-to-a-crawl and see what has changed.

Then: report back to this thread! :D

Also instead of logging off, try closing the browser and then re-opening it.

As mentioned, you don't send back every single character you type as you type it. You're just editing a little edit box locally on your computer -- it only goes when you click "send".

Does this happen at other web sites, too?

Now, having said all the above, Google's site and technology do indeed send back every character as you type it -- that's how it builds those auto-completion lists. Don't wanna confuse the issue, but A'hm jus' sayin'.

I've had issues accessing the forums over the last couple of days, but if pages load, they're fast enough. Sounds like an issue local to your machine.

Have you checked to see you haven't enabled Filterkeys from the accessibility options?

My usual browser is Firefox 5. Just read the replies- for which, thanks- and tried to reply individually. Halfway through that, it slowed to a STOP. I closed it and started Chrome.
Cache cleaning makes no difference, main drive fragmentation is low.
No memory hogs running- absolutely no apps other than FF5, the usual list of services and processes. Nothing big. I had to look up Control Panel even to find out what "Filterkeys" was/ were.
The finger is surely pointing at FF.

Here goes for a reinstall...

Did you try disabling any FF add-ons that you may have installed?

There were none.
I've reinstalled and I'll see what happens.
Before reinstalling, I ran Combofix which showed no problems.

And it certainly seems to be zooming along since reinstalling Firefox.
I'l just typetypetypeforabitandseewhathappenstypetypetypefo rabitandseewhathappens
typetypetypeforabitandseewhathappenstypetypetypefo rabitandseewhathappens,... just chat amongst yourselves for a bit... (wanders off, makes cocoa, wanders back).....still going.
Hm.
Well.
There you go.

Was that the same version (point release) or did you download an updated one?

I installed FF5 when it came out. I don't know if it's a different version.
The PC was off overnight and the slowness has returned this morning, so I think I need to look elsewhere.
Sometimes there seems to be a momentary screen blackout associated with the slowdown, (like a CMD window opening).
Task Manager shows biggest memory users apart from FF are DWM.exe (Desktop Windows Manager) explorer.exe and Fahcore (folding at home).
I have closed fahCore and the blackout has not happened now for a few minutes, whereas it was coming every 30 seconds or so with FahCore active, so it certainly seems to be implicated.

Just typed two minutes worth of random numbers in while watching the monitor. No blackout or slowdown.
Doesn't look good for FahCore.
I'll start something else running to use similar memory amounts and see if it recurs.

......

Nope. Openoffice has 2 databases, 3 spreadsheets (one big) and a document open, total 90+k which is more than FahCore was using. No slowdown.
Resumed work in FahCore and the problem is back immediately.
Well there's a pain in the butt.

Does it have a setting like BOINC that allows it to rest when other programs use the CPU?

You can allocate priority.
I've had problems running FAH before, but this interference with other applications is new.

I know that BOINC einstein@home can cause issues on my machine, even set to turn off during high use.
