Retail sales take big leap in March (http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/invest/extra/P80764.asp?GT1=3256)

The Commerce Department said retail sales rose an unexpectedly sharp 1.8% in March to a seasonally adjusted $333.01 billion, the biggest gain since March 2003. Excluding cars and trucks, sales gained 1.7%, that category's best performance since March 2000.

Wall Street analysts had expected both figures to advance a smaller 0.6%.

Economists closely track retail sales, which make up about 36% of overall consumer spending, the driver of two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.

Time to crank up production?

Doesn't that seem to suggest that retails sales tend to rise significantly in March?

Also, I seem to recall reading somewhere that a late Easter always has a significant effect on March sales.

Hey, we'll take any good news we can find, even if it takes a microscope.

Not to mention that the tax refunds are going out about that time.

What do you suppose the phrase "seasonally adjusted" means?

In the light of your quote? That maybe they need to adjust their method of adjustment.

Why are the markets tanking today? Is it some big contrarian conspiracy that hates "good news"?

The figures show the economy's solid recovery for jobs and spending continued into the first quarter of the year and may lead some economists to increase their growth forecasts -- and raises the likelihood of an interest-rate increase sooner rather than later.

I took a homeless guy to lunch. But it wasn't burgers, it was Subway. Guess that counts...
