Does anyone here use GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program)?

It's an open-source image editor. I use it for work, because it allows me to follow contours and make transparent coloured highlights much easier than MS Paint and MS Word illustrations. Attached is a typical example of what I use it for. The part I used for the sample is fairly flat, but many have contours and curves which I wan to be visible, hence the transparency.

They workers on the shop floor like them, and use them regularly.

Recently, we sent some down to our American plant (along with the relevant molds). They liked them there, too. But it turns out that the manager and main production supervisor are both colourblind. They can manage, but it isn't easy.

What I would like to do is replace or overlay the colours with patterns. Preferably just black lines. Angles, straight, cross-hatched,wavy, whatever. I need a few stripe-like patterns that can be easily differentiated. As downloaded, GIMP only has one such pattern; the rest are colours.

The problem is that I don't have a clue how to make patterns. I only have the most basic understanding of GIMP as it is. Enough to create, edit and fill or outline paths and layers. That's all I ever do with it.

I've looked online for free patterns, and found several. But all coloured. Like leopard spots and flower patterns.

Does anyone know where I can find simple, black-line hatch patterns?

If you do know, any help is appreciated.

For the record: The idea, development and creation of these Layup Instructions (LUI's) is original to me. Similar documents may exist in other companies, I don't know. I came up with the idea on my own, after observing difficulties on the floor about what layup to use when a part hadn't been made for a while. I'm rather proud of them, since they have become all but invaluable on the shop floor. I have also created a lot of work for myself trying to get LUI's done for all the parts we make (I'm nowhere near done).

I haven't used GIMP for years, but this sounds correct. From: http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-concepts-patterns.html

PAT

The .pat format is used for patterns which were created specifically for GIMP. You can convert any image into a .pat file by opening it in GIMP and then saving it using a file name ending in .pat.

So make a new image, add lines, save as .pat in the patterns folder.
