View Full Version : Fixer-Upper Denominational Poll

Not that it matters, but here's a better constructed poll, per belief system than "Christian or Atheist".

The categories were taken from:
http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html

Some were combined, because I couldn't get enough to fit. If you're offended by a combination, well, tough titties.

'Juche' (the official North Korean religion) does not appear on the list, so if you are 'Juche', you'll just have to chime in.

If you are "other", you'll also have to post.

And still no Unitarian option... :(

Well, if there were 20 or 30 available poll options... or I suppose I could've dropped some more options. Apparently, there just aren't enough of your faith in the world. ;) I had trouble even getting Judaism onto the list.

...
10. Juche: 19 million
...
15. Shinto: 4 million
16. Cao Dai: 3 million
17. Tenrikyo: 2.4 million
18. Neo-Paganism: 1 million
19. Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand
20. Rastafarianism: 700 thousand
21. Scientology: 600 thousand
22. Zoroastrianism: 150 thousand

And still no "other..." Geesh.

You could have at least slapped on a catch-all so everyone could vote.

Are you sure you don't want me laughing at you? 'Cause that's funny, no two ways about it.

Unfortunately, he complained while I was busy constructing this poll, but if you wish, we can spend a little while in this topic discussing how such a poll could be constructed with ten options, and a thousand faiths.

Not Atheistprobably would have sufficed.

No, no. It's either Atheist or Christian with Riddick - God knows those terrible heathens are nothing but demon-worshippers!

1. Believe in Judeo-Christian-Islamic god
2. Believe in other god
3. Believe in no god
4. Don't know/don't care about god(s)
5. Believe life was designed and built
6. Believe evolution/natural process made life
5. Believe universe was designed and built
6. Believe natural process made universe
7. Believe in afterlife
8. Believe in reincarnation
9. Believe this is 'it'
10. Member of church/organization based on above

I think you were close. If I were doing it I would have gone with the top eight choices, then "none" or "non-religious" (to avoid any atheist/agnostic hairsplitting) and an "Other" option. It still wouldn't be perfect but it would cover the bases I think.

Good idea. Only that there are two options two many ...

Perhaps you could put "no God" and "don't know" together and get rid of the last point.

You're right up there with Logical Deism.

I had thought Unitarian was very close to agnosticism.

I'm pretty sure I can have a maximum of ten choices of checkboxes, just like radio buttons.

But actually, since some are yes/no questions, we could possibly delete the negatives, and assume respondants-counts are the number who did not believe - but that would eliminate 'mu' as a choice.

Perhaps giving people a place to indicate the answer is meaningful?

Check all that apply... leave unchecked that which does not.
1. There is one or more god(s).
2. I care about the 'god' answer.
3. Life was designed and built.
4. Care about 'life' answer.
5. The universe was deliberate.
6. I care about 'universe' answer.
7. Afterlife/Reincarnation/etc. happens.
8. Care about 'Afterlife' answer.
9. I am certainly right.

I was always terribly frightened by the (tiny) possibility that Wraith wasn't actually Franko's sockpuppet and that his crazy religion did actually have at least one adherent.

Oh, well silly numbered list.

So, would that poll (above) mean anything, or would it simply be more 'drool'?

On the one hand, I don't like Riddick and don't want to support him. On the other hand ... All those cries of "False dichotomy!" and only one of the forty people who have voted so far voted for anything other than "Christian" and "Atheist/Nonreligious"? Looks to me like Riddick was pretty much right to think he could get away with only two options.

On the third hand (or tentacle in my case), how do we know how many people did not vote because they don't like any of the choices? We don't.

Well, we did get write-in votes for "19", and "Church of Shemp", and GTITS (Great Taco In The Sky).

As for the poll, the questions have to be brief, but they may need some explanation to make them meaningful.

Check what matches your beliefs (read topic opening post first!):

1. There is one or more god(s).
2. God(s) are important.
3. The universe was deliberate.
4. The nature of the universe is important.
5. Life was deliberate.
6. Life is important.
7. Afterlife/Reincarnation/etc. happens.
8. Afterlife/Reincarnation/etc. is important.
9. I am certainly right.
10. Member of church/organization based on some/all of above assertions.

Explanations:
1. Do you believe there are any gods?
2. Do you believe that gods have any influence on your life?
3. Do you think the universe came into being 'for a reason' or because someone/something with intelligence made it?
4. Do you believe that whether the universe 'just happened' or whether it was made is important to you?
5. Do you believe life was engineered/made, instead of a natural/evolutionary process?
6. Do you believe that life is important?
7. Do you believe that there is continued existance for you, some people, everyone, etc. after death?
8. Do you believe this afterlife has some importance relevant to this life?
9. Do you believe you can't possibly be mistaken in any of these beliefs?
10. Are you a member of an organization (with other followers) based on some of these beliefs?
