View Full Version : Big Freeze in Florida?

Coming from California, I was shocked to read this CNN report: (http://www.cnn.com/2003/WEATHER/01/23/winter.weather/index.html)

A hard freeze warning was issued from the Florida Panhandle, where temperatures were expected to drop into the teens or low 20s, south to Miami, where it was expected to reach the low 30s.

I presume that is Fahrenheit. Sounds pretty cold to me!

That doesn't sound good at all. Especially since I live in San Diego. Luciana said she was going to be wearing a coat no matter what, so I guess she'll be happy!

Ummmm.... I'm coming from Ottawa. Right now, the temperature is 6 degrees Farenheit (-14 Celcius) with a wind chill of -10F (-23 celcius). Last night, it was -16 F (-27 Celcius).

Any weather which does not involve body parts falling off when you step outside will be welcome to me.

I'm always having a problem trying to figure out the weather anywhere. Who can you believe?

CNN says one thing and The Weather Channel says another.

{sigh}

It will be a *relief* to experience Florida's cold, after all this suffocating heat in Rio! I'm slowly building an incredible tan (I swim at the beach everyday), even though I use a SPF 50 sunblock. Hottest summer in ages. The rain? It turns into vapor before hitting the ground, kid you not.

I'll take my warmest coat - and you guys don't laugh! It's probably flimsy compared to what you have to wear. :D

I travel a lot, and I live in a place where the weather changes on an hourly basis. I deal with this all the time.

I suggest waiting until the day before the meeting, go online, check as many sources as you can, and average them (but keep an eye on the max and min temps). That's what I'm doing. You don't need to worry about it until you pack anyway (unless you don't have the right clothes for the weather).

Sounds unbearable. The high today here is 65. I had to put on a sweatshirt when I went out to get lunch. Six years living in San Diego has turned me into a weather wimp. (Though I do miss rain, which we don't get enough of here.)

You're right, Mark.

Just a fair warning to everyone attending: don't be too surprised to see me walking around in a tank top and shorts the whole time, except during the conference. Then I'll actually be wearing pants and a dress shirt. Anything else is optional.

It's currently 5:10 PM and still sunny and warm...about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. But there is a cold front bearing down on us and the prediction is that as soon as it gets here, in the next several hours, the temperature will plunge. They're predicting a freeze for tonight, with low 30s along the coast and high 20s inland....coldest weather in many years. That doesn't mean it won't warm up by Monday though and stay mild through the week. Watch the forecasts as Phil suggests. And definitely bring a light jacket at least.

It is SO COLD!!!
This is day 10 of below zero temps for the high.
Add wind chill, and we are talking Planet Hoth.
For the first time in 15 years the weekly skiing was cancelled at school because if you had any exposed skin you would have frost bite in 15 minutes.
Time to get some warmth and anything over 30 qualifies as warm at this point.

I'm with you, kittynh. I'm sitting in my studio practically on top of the space heater, listening to the snowplow go by, and freezing. Twenty would be down right tropical.

(edited to spell kittynh's name correctly)

Well it gets around 20 during the day around here. Unfortunatly the heat is out and the pipe right next to me burst a little while ago. At least got an electric blanket!

La-la-la-la-la! It's 28C here, or 84F, according to the New York Times. And this is MIDNIGHT!

Tan? Of course I can prove it. I have very visible ones on my feet. :D

OK, so maybe now is a good time for Randi to test a Native Weather Shaman! You know he could do some great dance dressed as a wolverine to call on the sun and heat gods!

I'll get you for that.... :)

Does it ever get really, friggin', toe-losing, balls-freezing, booger-petrifying cold? Ah, the joys of a sub-zero climate....

Hmmm....nope. Not good enough. We need something to compare with. Tan-lines or something...! (Assuming you have tan-lines! :D)

well :-p !!

it was 7F last night around 9:00 when the water pipe in my room, next to my computer burst. It had frozen during the day and had just thawed out when trying to get the heat going again. We now got partial heat on one floor in one half of home. Not to mention the water damage.

Hopefully the pipes do not have any other leaks, and the heat will be on again when I get home.

You know, I think that's something that the designers of the modern keyboard really missed the boat on -- the "degrees" symbol! Where's the "°" symbol on the keyboard?

I don't know anyone who regularly uses the "`" key, the "|" key or even the "^" key very often! But everybody talks about the weather! How many thousands of man-hours (and women-hours, which are far more valuable) have been lost over the past 25 years because of people having to type "degrees" rather than simply pressing a key?

 And could anything be dumber than the fact that the "/", "*", "-" and "+" keys on the right side of the keyboard don't have an alternate character when you hit Shift? What idiot designed this thing?

Computer programmers tend to use those, and without us, your computer would be unusable, so quit complaining! ;)

That would make laptop keyboard design much more difficult, though I guess laptops could just not include the extra symbols on the keyboard.

Well, for all you Windows users out there, here's yet another one we Apple™ users have got on you. The key combination <option> and zero gives us º without having to access a "special characters" drop down.

P.S. — ™ £ ¢ ? § ¶ • ª º – != å_?_ç_?_´_ƒ_© ?_ˆ_?_?_¬_µ_˜_ø_<pi>_œ_®_ß_†_¨_?_<sum>_?_¥_? :)

PC users can just type ALT-248 to get °.

For those of you not from the south.

Winter in the south is different than for those above the Mason-Dixon line. Here in Dallas, it's fluxuated between the 30s and the 70s for highs for the last 3 weeks. The low Thursday night was 19, we're looking at 75 for a high on Tuesday. Florida is the same way, though less extreme.

Phil and Linda had the best advice, check on-line sources and The Weather Channel right before you pack your bags and as those of us who have lived up north know - dress in layers.

I live in Savannah, Georgia and I live through the burden of the southeast states. The weather here is so screwy, you can never really be sure what it's going to be.

Example: about a week ago we went down to the beach and a few daring souls went swimming. Was a little chilly, but tolerable. A few days later I was driving to work and we had snow flurries.

Go figure.

26th January 2003, 01:53 PM
I think I'll just wait for the forecast tomorrow because that's when we have to pack. It's difficult to know what to pack. We have to bring heavy coats with us otherwise we'll freeze going to the airport.

Did you know its at least a 4 hour drive from Fort Lauderdale to the Kennedy Space Center?
