Last week I sucked up my male pride and went to see the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's rendition of Romeo and Juliet:

I loved it!

Even since, I've been listening to nothing but Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. All I've heard is bad press about ballet, but its something I can really enjoy.

Anyone have recommendations for interesting ballets or performances they've attended? I'd like to hear some other opinions on this, rather than the 'fairy' comments from my friends.

"Firebird" and "Sleeping Beauty" are two personal favorites.

I have a wonderful memory of my grandmother taking me to see " The Nutcracker" every year as a young child.

If you can find video recordings of Nuryev or Barishnikov I highly reccomend watching them. The sheer athletic grace with which they moved was stunning.

I'm not sure from your message whether you discovered the music or the dancing. But if you liked the dancing, there are many classical ballets, such as the one you saw, along with more modern stuff. Almost all dancing is based on ballet principles, and most dancers and choreographers started with ballet training. So I see George Balanchine and Bob Fosse coming from much the same place. Just gather up videos of the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater. Of the more contemporary dancing, I particularly enjoy work by Paul Taylor.

Dude.

You wear a dress.

You love watching ballet.

To top it off, you use loaded phrases like "sucked up my male pride".

I think it is time to face the Deep Dark Truthful Mirror.

Dude.

Its called a kilt

because that's what I did to the last guy to call it a dress.

(though I admit that was a poor word choice)

I'm more of a musician, so I appreciated the music moreso at the beginning, but I went with my ex-gf (we're back to being friends) who's a Ukrainian dancer (very similar to ballet techniques), so she filled me in on the dancing side of it.
Boo, the Nutcracker was basically the selling point for me to go this time. I had last seen it...12 or 13 years ago.(I can't remember it, but my mom says I really enjoyed it).

Thanks for the suggestions all, I'll stop down at the library and see if I can find some dvd's or videos of performances.

Did you wear a floor length, evening gown style kilt to the ballet?
