I just reinstalled my windows xp (over the previous installation), which is nice, but on startup now i get a - cannot find program "ERROR" - error. I think the on start up program registry has got an error in it that tells it to run a program called ERROR.
Whats the easiest way to edit the registry to take this out ? I really don't want to do a complete format and reinstall if i can help it.

It might be worth searching the registry for something like error.exe or error.com, but it sounds to me like a more generic error, rather than a reference to a program called error.
You might want to take a look at Registry First Aid (http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/reg1aid/) , which is a very useful utility for registry cleaning.

If you reloaded XP then the registry got rewritten and it won't be coming from there.
Check your startup folder (both your own user name and allusers).

Check the event log.
Run regedit if you can and look for the dodgy program name in this registry key.
If you mean that windows doesn't let you in to run regedit then start the machine in safe mode, check the event log and run regedit if necessary.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
The error may or may not be caused by a registry value.

Thankyou for the replies, i'll have a look later. I expect the way it usually works out it will take about 4 hours and then i'll get a glaringly obvious or basic solution :D
