Should XP pirates get SP2? (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/25/xp_pirates_sp2/)

Imagine if the fire department checked the title of a house before it decided whether or not to extinguish a fire. Of course, all analogies are inherently suspect, and software is not a car or a house. But, as worms and DDoS attacks constantly remind us, the net is only as secure as its weakest link.

Can't Microsoft just give pirates a special SP2 that sends an email to the local police department after installation?

Or asks for the person's credit card number if they want to continue to use Windows?

Remember that a lot of these pirated os's are overseas, on dial up. They couldn't possibly download sp2 even if they cared. I'd like to see isp's take a more active role in CUTTING OFF ACCESS to infected boxes. For a while I was getting so much spam and port scans from Taiwan and China I was hoping Comcast would just blacklist the IP allocation for that chunk of the planet.

One good thing I have seen is that some broadband isp's are shipping cable/dsl modems with built in NAT as basic service. Eventually this will cut down on infections.

What does it matter? SP1 was hacked in minutes.

Oh, I didn't think of that. You're a genius!

It would have been convenient, but I suppose I'll just have to "borrow" a newer copy.
