I say this as a big fan of Channel 4's adaptation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004CVXQ/qid%3D1086390532/026-3803762-9164420) but I find the books a tad heavy. I read the first three books (reissued as one volume as a tie-in) but now I'm trying the fourth book (At Aunt Molly's) and must admit that I'm reading it purely to see if Simon Russell Beale's Widmerpool was true to the books.

It strikes me very modern (mid-20th century onwards) English classic novels don't make good TV / films. Waugh, Amis, etc have never been brought to the screen with any alacrity.
