View Full Version : Woman's science

From Randi's latest commentary, from a TT expert:
"That's Man's science. Therapeutic Touch is Women's science!"
I find that very insulting to women.
I think what she really meant was, "This empowers us. If man's domineering (and coincidentally skeptical) nature forces us to delude ourself and others in order to have power, no matter how ill-gotten, then so be it!"
The actuality of man's dominance in society and his supposed staked claim of scientific thought, however, is another discussion altogether.

She was so wrong. Not only is it not women's, but it is most definitely not science.

It's kind of sad, if she actually feels that way. To lie to others and yourself in order to bring yourself up (gain money, fame, etc.), is indeed insulting to women. Especially to the women who are working in the real physical sciences.
I wonder if she actually believes that TT is real....

I wonder what kind of science the TT expert thinks has been done by Marie Curie, Maria Goeppert Mayer, Gertrude Elion, Rosalyn Yalow, Rosalind Franklin, Judith Franz, Lise Meitner, Maxine Singer, Barbara McClintock, Chien Shiung Wu, Dorothy Hodgkin, Jane Goodall, Grace Hopper, Leona Woods Marshall Libby, Irene Joliot-Curie, and the many other great REAL women scientists.

As a woman, I find it very insulting that she made this statement.

 Impressive. I definatly could not rattle off a list like that. In fact *embarassment, reaches for google* I don't know who most of these scientists are.

I'm bumping this because I wanted to preserve that list of women scientists and because I'm peeved by the dismissive use of the terms "male science" and "Western science".

I'll just throw in Hypatia of Alexandria as a rather creative one, though she also apparently pushed vitalism--a nuisance meme which still hasn't gone away despite its uselessness.
