linux dvd

i am running suse 9.1 , but i am finding it quite tricky getting original dvd's to run on it . i am a linux newbieish , anyone with the same experience .

I would suggest typing 'linux' and 'dvd' into Google.

Or someone can email you (not pm you) the link to whatever they're using.

Otherwise it might be exposing JREF to some heat from the RIAA that it'd rather not have.

thank you for the reply , the dvd's are not copies , and i am not asking about anything other than playing legally owned original dvd's on a linux box so where does the riaa come into it , i have googled for dvd + linux , but i was hoping i could find sombody in the computer area of the forum with similar experiences . and fyi we do not come under the riaa in the uk , well not yet

I'm sure that your DVD's are legal. But that's not the problem.

The code to decrypt them and play them on a Linux box is illegal in the US thanks to the dumba$$ Digital Millennium Act. Or it might be. The lawsuits and prosecutions are currently taking place to determine your rights when it comes to information you've purchased, and the medium that they're on.

Even though you're in the UK, if the JREF forum has a link anywhere to a webpage that has the code to decrypt DVDs on an uncertified OS (ie Linux), that exposes JREF to legal liability.

Especially thanks to some judges rulings in California regarding websites that had links to the code in question. If a web site has a link to a site with the code in question, then that web site is violating the judge's order.

I know that some people here use Linux all the time, and probably play their DVDs on it. One of them should be able to email you a link after you PM your addy to them.

I've only played a few different DVDs on Linux (both Region 1 and Region 2, IIRC), but I had no problem with Gentoo.

Can't help you with any SuSE packages, though. You may end up compiling everything yourself (you need libdvdcss among other libraries).

With Mandrake I've had no problems playing DVDs after installing the DVD-specific packaged from the installation media. I didn't need to download anything from the web.

Damn...now I've admitted this, I'll probably be arrested if I ever try to enter the USA. Oh well, that's another holiday destination gone. :(

I have used MPlayer with SUSE 9.0 but prefer Kaffeine with SUSE 9.1. The files I had to install were:

libdvdcss rpm (From RPM-find)
w32codec-0.52
libxine1-(version)-xxxxxx.i686.rpm
curl-7.10.3-1.i386.rpm (from DVD - is devel)
xine-ui-(version)-xxxxxx.i586.rpm
xine-mozilla-plugin

The curl file is curl-devel and is on the SUSE DVD. The libdvdcss file was on the RPM-find site. The other files I found on a site as a result of a Google search - probably something on Kaffeine, DVDs and SUSE.

Ouch. I liked SuSE, but thank you for reminding me why I'll never use an RPM-based distro again :) It's a shame Gentoo and Debian are impossible for normal people to install...

He he - installing the files for MPlayer was much more painful.

You can use apt-get with SUSE of course and I used to...I remember the sheer hell it was installing *that*.
