View Full Version : Install problem in XP

OK, I'm stumped.

I've tried to install a new piece of software, but after reboot, the installation hangs. I can CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the task list to terminate the installation, and everything works fine from then on.

But: I am not allowed to install anything else, before this process is over. Not good.

I've tried to roll back to previous system configurations, but curiously, XP can't do that with any date.

Any solutions?

You've tried reinstalling the piece of software in question from scratch again? Is it an Installshield install, or an msi?

Yeps. It can't even recognize that I am trying to install the same program.

Have you tried using regedit to remove any registry entries? delete anything in your temp folder and then try again?

I thought about that, but I wouldn't know where to look.

No. Which temp? windows/temp?

Depends on your version of Windows. 2000/XP has folder Winnt/temp or Windows/temp and also in "Documents and Settings/yourname/Local Settings/temp"

Hmmm......I'll delete whatever is in there?

In my experience, you can safely delete anything in those temp folders. A couple of folders seem to live permanently in there (depending on what you have installed) but they'll just silently recreate themselves if necessary.

A lot of installs store their files in those folders, so it may help, but if so, you also need to delete whatevers calling the files. And if you can't install anything else now, that suggests that MSI itself is unhappy. You could also try reinstalling MSI; it can be downloaded from Microsoft, and sometimes helps with installation issues when reinstalled.
