Dear Professor Levitt (njlevitt@hotmail.com):
I am writing to compliment you on the eloquence of your recent response to my friend Mike Bayham, who writes a column for GOPUSA.com. Mike wrote a recent editorial on John Kerry that irritated you so badly you decided to write him with the following response:
I think turd eating, s*** sucking mother f***** fits you just about right
(although your mother was hardly worth it; my Lab Retriever up and caught the clap when he f***** your mama).
The height of polemical eloquence? Perhaps not. But then thrice-used scumbags like you hardly demand much recourse to the thesaurus. Die before you plan to, and in much pain.

Well “NL,” unfortunately for you, Mr. Bayham did an e-mail trace and found out out that your name is Norman Levitt, that is Professor Norman Levitt of the Math Department at Rutgers University.

Fortunately this is the internet, and no harm can be done with such personal information by either law-abiding methods, or non for that matter......

Hmmm....
One would almost think that such a diatribe against a Gop.com columnist by Prof. Levitt, himself an ardent critic of the academic left, and inspiration for the Sokal Hoax of Science Wars fame, would have been front page news...

I've never heard of the either guy, and don't know if this story is true or not, but it's not that difficult to spoof an email address. I could do it, although probably not so skillfully that it couldn't be detected by someone who's better at computers than I.

He sounds like O'Reilly, Coulter and Limbaugh..
Of course they are heard by millions rather than a few hundred.

Tracing an email has nothing to do with the provided user name, spoofed or not. It's all predicated on IP info embedded in the header of every email sent (often you must set you email program to display it).
Spoofing an IP number is also possible, but only by a much more advanced user. 99 times out of 100 a good look at the header will tell you everything about the account that originally sent the email, name notwithstanding. Unless you use a good net remailer like manicmail.net.

Yes and no. Anyone using the same university/ISP/webmail server will have nearly identical headers. Since most ISPs use DHCP, the exact originating IP is meaningless, unless you have access to the ISP's logs. The best you can get from an IP is the owner of that block, which will usually give you a location and an ISP.
(edit) Anyway, I think in this case an "e-mail trace" is just self-aggrandizing ******** for "I noticed you use your real name in your Hotmail address".

Never mind that, given his usual choice of topics and his hit-and-run approach to addressing them, does he seriously expect to be treated as anything other than a n00b?

"Happy-looking-bomb-blast-lady" makes an important social statement, I believe.

I notice that you have a tendency to step in with a "nice" comforting statement in favor of the poor aggrieved party, regardless of the issue. Truth is, Nie Trink looks like a disgusting slob, just like that Moore guy (worse actually), who also takes pride in it. That says something about who they appeal to and what they see themselves as (other than possibly as recognised hypocrits, or trolls). And, btw, I don't see the social statement you reference, anymore than your your own that is.

Actually, Nie looks like this:

Ironically, he likes to refer to John Kerry as 'Lurch'.

Still haven't seen any news coverage that a noted author sent such an email to a GOP.com columnist.
Anyone else found any links?

Still nothing in the news on this...
Am I the only skeptic at JREF, or did anyone else wonder how this columnist knew that this Norman Levitt with a hotmail account was in fact the professor at Rutgers, instead of say, the Norman Levitt across town?
And if Hotmail is not in the habit of releasing the exact identity of their account holders, why would the columnist suspect the professor whose recent and well known book was an attack on left-wing academics, instead of some other Norman Levitt, or someone using the name Norman Levitt to get a fake Hotmail account?

WOA! That's clever... using a name that's NOT REALLY your name when you sign up for Hotmail. That should be illegal!

And of course no college kid would ever do such a thing for a joke, without thinking about what is and isn't legal.
