C-SPAN, the cable television network popular with political junkies and insomniacs, is outraged that the City Club of Cleveland has banned broadcast media from covering today's speech by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Especially galling, says C-SPAN, is that Scalia is coming to the club to collect its Citadel of Free Speech Award.

The ban on broadcast media, demanded by Scalia, "begs disbelief and seems to be in conflict with the award itself," C-SPAN Vice President and Executive Producer Terry Murphy wrote in a letter last week to the City Club. "How free is speech if there are limits to its distribution?"

Scalia made the same demand on John Carroll University, where he spoke last night, a university spokeswoman said.

What year is it?

Let's all say it together: "1984".

(And from the same article:
In response to a student's question, Scalia said it was "a wonderful feeling" to have led the Supreme Court's rejection of a recount of the Florida vote, thus handing the election to Bush.)
I'll bet it was you slimy whore.

Are you serious? I hope not.

Didn't have any "nefarious plot" in mind at all. Was just referring to the irony.
By the way, regarding your "hatred" allegation,

I agree Congress is boring, I prefer to watch the British Parliament instead.

Wouldn't it be great if our president had to stand up every day and field questions from Congress, like the PM has to do?
It is a great show.

I was thinking about that very thing today. It would be interesting.

Seems pretty clear to me. If you want Scalia to make a visit, you don't allow cameras. There is nothing involuntary going on here.

So how does 1984 figure into this again? I hate people who use kafkaesque when things aren't kafkaesque, don't make me hate you for using 1984 without a clear link.

Don't hate me just cause I'm beautiful:)
Just the paradox of banning media in a "Freedom of Speech" event.
Get it?

It would have been ironic if it was a "Freedom of the Press" award.

Perhaps a bit, but not too much, considering that the "Press" wasn't banned.

Just the broadcase media.

It was ironic.
Freedom of the press and speech are two sides of the same coin.

Its easy to disagree, with any issue. That takes no thinking.
Clarence Darrow was invited to debate an issue, and when he asked how long he had to prepare said, "Because if I'm on the negative side I can start right now."
