Some reviews

It is, in this critic’s opinion, the breakout cinematic story – and the best film thus far – of 2004. A stylish, exciting, truly remarkable achievement in film.

The completed cinematic work that is "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is an utterly mesmerizing, boundlessly imaginative achievement, perhaps—and I do not use such terms lightly—the most visually astounding motion picture ever made.

"Sky Captain" opens Sept. 17 and it's unlike any film you've seen this year. It has got dazzling visuals, amazing special effects and a fun story - a living, breathing comic book.

Looks really interesting -

You're kind of in the forum with this thread, but you're right. It looks like wonderful 30's sci-fi pulp and oh so fun.

I don't know the story, but the trailer makes it look alot like Things To Come (remember Wings Over The World?).

I just saw it. H.G. Wells' Wings Over The World is definately an influence. I found it took a bit to get into it, based mainly on the extreme soft focus and the color palette (I think it would have been better as a B&W movie). Once you get over that though, it is a while lot of fun. I preferred Jolie's character to Paltrow's. Jolie has basically a large cameo, but seems to have a lot of fun with it Law is charming and channels the 30's serial action hero pretty well. Paltrow tries hard for a Hepburn vibe, but ultimately misses. I enjoyed it a lot and it was more fun than a lot of movies I've seen.

I saw the movie yesterday. It was basically a greatly protracted episode of Max Fleischer's Superman. Gwyneth Paltrow's character, the reporter Polly Perkins, was obviously inspired by the independent and audacious portrayal of Lois Lane in the immortal cartoon serial, not to mention the entire visual style of the movie reveling in early 20th century art deco and the giant robots looking to be almost carbon copies of those from the episode of Superman entitled "The Mechanical Monsters."

The movie borrows. Wow. Tell me something I don't know.

My wife and I saw it today, and thought it was a lot of fun. Not the heady rush you got from Indiana Jones, but quite enjoyable.

I thought there were nods to tons of 30s-ish comics, films, and stories, from Doc Savage to King Kong, to the old Commando Cody serials.
I liked the noir-ish look of the thing, and quite remarkable from the standpoint that almost the entire film is CGI.
