View Full Version : Welcome to North Korea...the movie...

Did anyone see the short Documentary "Welcome to North Korea" on Cinemax the other night? It was like watching the twilight zone. The thing that struck me most about the Orwellian world they've created there is that it is indeed unique in the world today. As bad, evil as Saddam is, nothing compares to the Kims and their state. I mean, Iraqis listen to outside media, people from all over the world travel there, etc. It may be a terror state, but it is a terror state with many holes for all of the dangers. Clearly, in North Korea, there are far fewer holes. Watching the tears for the death of Kim Il Sung was amazing, their absolute faith, belief in the state frightening, and the outrageous, straight faced delivery of myth (Cranes descended from heaven to take Kim Il Sung to Heaven upon his death...) incredible.
Fortunately, they have the bomb....

It was made, I think, by a Dutchman. What was interesting was the contrasting footage...on his official tour, he was lead through all of these vast, empty palaces and grand monuments to the Kims. Than, they cut in some "smuggled" footage of the country-side where you could see the devestation and starvation. Truely frightening. Also, he had one of those interesting shots from his hotel room of Pyongyang at night -- hardly a light to be seen -- vs. Souel, which looked like New York.
I hope they can see this in South Korea...though I doubt that they can....

Just courious headscratcher, but who is that guy you have as your avatar?
I was watching some footage of the N.Koreans marching in some sort of parade and I could have sworn they were carrying a picture of that same guy.

My avatar you ask?
You mean the picture of the Glorious Great Leader? The Sun of the 20th Century? The Father and hope of the Great Korean People? The Master of the Juche ideal and the incomparable General of the People and the Army? The world reknowed and beloved author? The excellent philosopher and expounder on the army-centered policy?
You mean that guy?

I told you! The Great Leader, Dear Father, Sun of the 20th Century...
Kim Il Sung, "founder" of the Korean People's Workers Party. Generalismo of the Korean Army. Deafeater of the Japanese. Brilliant defender of the Great Korean people against the imperialist American running dogs. Father of the Dear Leader (and Sun of the 21st Century), Comrade Kim Jung Il. And, ex-person (d. 1996).

So, why do you have a picture of him?

Jesus was a piker. Best he could do is four thin books, and four other guys had to write them. Kim wrote 8 (count them 8) volumes on the Juche ideal! Besides, he was born on a sacrad mountain, whereas Jesus could only manage a manger. Further, Cranes decended from heaven to carry away his body after his death, where as Jesus maybe only rose from the dead...well, maybe in that there is some similarity.

So, why do you have a picture of him?
Because, as is made obvious by this picture, he has the most perfect white teeth imaginable.

Me thinks he needs the Hair Club for men...and a couple of months in one of his concentration camps (at a minimum).

Actually, among rappers, I think he is referred to as "'lil Kim" ...
Saddam is a murderous psychopath. THis guy, however, is delusional, badly mis-informed and might actually believe his own rhetoric...

Interesting stuff Headscratcher...
I used to read the Pyongyang Times as a joke in University. My roomate being from South Korea told me about it.
It was so bizzare and so transparent it defied any rational belief (I guess that is why some far left wing college students read it and actually believed it.)
I mean they would have supposed pictures of South Koreans starving in the street and compare it to a picture of a typical North Korean family with not a hair out of place smiling at a full dinner table with a picture of the "Great Leader" behind them...
It was comical how they kept referring to the "Great Leader." One article I remember was about how much they love him and the limitations of language to express how much they love him.
I think it is funny that North Korea and the world is shocked that Bush called them evil. If you read what North Korea has been putting out on a daily basis about how evil America is and how they will "destroy the American imperalists with fire," Bush seems downright mild...:p

Thanks for the interesting thread, HS. It has prompted me to do a bit of searching and I came across the Korean Central News Agency of DPRK website. I also found the Pyongyang Times website, but that one was down. The site was alarming. To think that a whole nation really believes that Japan is planning to attack and reinvade NK as evidenced by installing a missle defense system and with a military of something lik 40,000 troops is amazing. I've always known that NK was an "Orwellian" state, and I've heard the stories before, but it really is an eye opener to see it myself.

By the way, not that I'd ever advocate or really know about such a thing, but a friend of a friend*wink* told me that if somebody that is reading this has always heard about the excellent book by George Orwell, 1984, or many other books, one could do so with little effort and time, and no money, by using IRC to go to an Undernet server and joining the channel #bookz. I do not know how accurate this information is, *wink* but my friend *wink* has never lied to me. It is supposedly a great source of information and literature for poor college students who cannot afford such luxuries on their own, like my friend *wink*.
Is that enough winks for everyone?

I think you're shortchanging (http://www.cdi.org/issues/Asia/japanmil.html) Japan's military might. Not as badly as North Korea is exaggerating it's aggressive intentions, of course.

Thanks for the correction, aero.
Closer to 300,000 than 40,000. I suppose the point is still valid. You're right that it is still an exaggeration, though. How 300,000 troops could attack a defensive position with 1,000,000 troops is a mystery to me...Who knows with those mean spirited Japanese, though.

Dr. B:
No. However, I am no expert, but Saddam is a serial killer -- both personally, and institutionally, do you think he has a conscience in any normal sense of the word? If not, isn't that the deffinition of a psychopath?
Was Stalin sane?
As to Kim...the cult of the personality he propounds and expands would, to me at least, suggest that the man is delusional, maybe not a psychiatric opion.....but it sees to fit observational and known facts..

It's not normal, having no conscience. Saddam may meet criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
As for Kim, he's just nuts.:p
