Does this count as racism?

I am wondering if this counts as racism.

I'm caucasian, and I am most attracted to the olive-skinned european faces. I love black hair.

I am not in the least bit attracted to Asian or Black faces. I do recognize what somebody else might consider beautiful, heck I think there's beauty there too, but I don't find them at all attractive. I don't think I could be turned-on by a black or asian woman.

So, does that make me racist?

It would be an odd form of racism since I also don't like pale or freckled skin (even though that's what I'm wearing!). I really don't like red hair. ick!

No. You just have a particular aesthetic preference, and all aesthetic preferences are completely subjective.

I think racism is a choice. You don't normally choose to whom you are attracted to sexually, so therefore I don't see that it's racism. I've gone out with women of several different races. The skin can feel different, hair...there are physical differences between the races that may or may not be attractive to others.

Often, people feel comfortable around their own "kind". For example, San Francisco has Chinatown. These people, in my opinion, are not racist simply because they choose to be among their own culture etc. Of course the "Chinatown's" (of all races) of the USA formed more out of a need for immigrants to stick together and help each other out in the early days of our country, but they still exist to this day.

It's human nature for people to be comfortable around others of their own race and culture, at least to some degree. I think there are definite exceptions to the dictionary definition. It ain't as black and white as it seems (pun intended).

However, someone who prefers blonde hair...now I'd say that's a definite Nazi (just kiddin!) ;)

Just because you discriminate does not mean you are racist. Its one thing to say you prefer certain qualities in another person. Racism would be implying that other are inferior for not having those qualities.

i have noticed myself that the 'opposites attract', or 'romeo and juliet' theory applies to race as well. our need to mix different genes for genetic advantage could well be built in.

my wife, although she is of irish descent, has olive skin. this can apparently be traced to a spanish influence to the irish blood from the time of the spanish armada, when many survivors wound up in ireland.

Can you elaborate on this? I can't quite see what you're getting at. DNA tests can be used to determine historical facts (eg. whether the natives on Easter Island arrived there from the eastern or western continents), and surely that's biology?

I know that it's possible to determine origine ( althought I am not so sure about the percentages of success...) with a DNA test.

But this is not a method to write History. It's not an aknowledged method-by Historians- to write History.

Are you a Biologist? I want to ask you or anybody else who knows something.

The gene of mediterranean anaemia has dissapeared from the populations that have migrated to Northen America during the last centuries ( it can't be traced anymore in the black populations). In that case don't we have a problem when we want ot determine origine using a DNA test only?

I think that it also depends on the reasons why you find those people unattractive. Do you dislike black color or do you dislike their anatomy?

See, I do see that she has all the components of what we generally understand as beautiful:

- symmetry
- health
- youth
- clear eyes/teeth/skin
- excellent proportions

But there's no...tingling, like the kind I get when I see Vanessa Lombardi, for example. I'm beginning to suspect the reason might be that I feel a certain familiarity when I see Europeans, since I grew up with them, aloing the lines of what schplurg was saying. Even though I'm not olive-skinned myself, (me mum was a brit).

I think really dark, dark skin - the kind that's almost blue, is beautiful. I just don't feel the urge to get intimate. If someone like that approached me, (well, now that I'm almost married it doesn't apply, but for argument's sake) I wouldn't turn them down just because of it.

Perhaps it's kinda like a kid who decides she doesn't like broccoli before she even tries it.

My aunt told me about a case in England a few decades ago where a white woman gave birth to a black baby. Her white husband divorced her, but she had not been unfaithful. Apparently, a few generations back in her family, there had been a man with black skin in the family, and apparently the gene had asserted itself. (pardon me if I got the terms wrong)
