I haven't run across this on before
I'd guess they are some kind of camra artifact but I don't know enough about camers to make that guess worth anything.

They have already been proven a hoax, I don't have a link off-hand and my computer is messed up so I cannot copy and paste links, but you could just google up the words "UFO rods hoax" and you'll probably get something.
They are just bugs flying across the camera screen (video or still frame, doesn't matter) the reason they look like a screw is because a bug's wing flaps MUCH faster than the camera's framrate giving it a sine/cosine wave appearance.
This is actually one of the oly camera flaws that most ghost-hunters and UFO-nuts will actually agree is a hoax. But don't dare try to call a "ectoplasm" cigarette smoke from the camera man! ;)

Yep, they are just bugs flying in high-contrast areas, reflecting light against a dark background, with a fairly long shutter speed. It is so very clear, but that does not stop such sites as Roswell Rods (http://www.roswellrods.com/) from promoting them as some cryptozoological news. Want more? Google returns quite a lot when you enter "roswell rods".

Well check this (http://www.orbsbybeans.com) out.
These people are investigating a similar "phenomenon". Their chosen methodology is... dowsing.

I haven't heard of these in the past couple of years at all, so I was thinking that they must have faded away. After all, the "rods" idea (alien life forms visible only on camcorder recordings) makes the whole "chemtrail" nonsense seem downright plausible by comparison.

It would appear to be still alive

The first time I ran across the effect I was dozing off reading, saw "smoke" out of the corner of my eye, and thought I'd lit up without realizing it. (not inconcievable given the strength of my habit) When I looked down, it appeared as though my entire arm (then body as I looked around more) was smoking.
