Shock and Awe Begins Says Fox News

If so, that's too bad. I have begun to suspect more and more that shock and awe is not necessary.

Every building we destroy we're going to be paying to rebuild.

I hope Fox is wrong, and we're winning the war without a mass bombing campaign.

I am not sure how true this is, but, I have heard speculation that Saddam is dead, and the Iraqi military is 'breaking from within'. I believe both of these I heard on Fox news and other (NBC) last night. So, if that is true, or if our military believes it may be true, is the shock and awe necessary right now? or maybe even at all? I am sure all of the military targets will result in some civilian casualties. I know that just becuase saddam may be dead doesnt mean his inner circle (including his sons) wouldnt still put up resistance, but at least from what we have seen in the news there doesnt seem to have been any resistance yet.

I am not saying that we shouldnt do the shock and awe thing, but just that if the rumors are true or at least the government thinks they may be true, wouldnt it be good to wait a little while to see if it is still necessary. (I do however, realize that this decision may be complicated by the fact that they may be just laying low until we get into urban combat, and that the resistance may have just not been reported to the media, I'm just asking a question.)

Yeah,...you're right of course. I guess this means that negotiations have broken down??

....now Fox is backpedalling.......

one explosion neither shocks nor awes....unless you're under it I guess.

From the article with that headline:

"Air raid sirens are sounding over Baghdad as the Iraqi capital braces for a possible air assault from allied troops."

"Earlier in the day, eight American B-52 bombers took off from Fairford Airbase in Britain -- a sign that major nighttime air strikes could be hours away."

So it's "possible" and "could be." And remember, Fox News also reported that Tariq Aziz had defected.

I thought Fox News reported that there were rumors of Tariq Aziz's defection.

thought Fox News reported that there were rumors of Tariq Aziz's defection.

I think the confusion here is that they intended to report that Aziz is defication...

Sorry, couldn't pass that up...:o

Now Fox is reporting: "This is it!" as a quote from the Pentagon.

Get near a tv if you can....I think we're about to see some real interesting "reality" tv

Time for a walk down to the cafeteria, where the TV's are.

You should probably remain seated.

But they've got to do something, the war is just too...boring.

No fancy nighttime light shows. No Berny Shaw hanging the telephone out the window. Just a lot of reporters standing around saying "Seen anything yet?"

This was going to be Fox's chance to be the CNN of Gulf War II. Unfortunately for them, as I said in another thread, it's not a TV war (yet).

"Al-Sahhaf suggested that any captured U.S. and British soldiers may not be treated as prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions. Al-Sahhaf said Iraq was considering how to treat them.

"Those are mercenaries. Most probably they will be treated as mercenaries, hirelings and as war criminals. ... For sure, international law does not apply to those," he said. "

To be honest, I've been wondering if the resistance the ground troops have been meeting has been bolstered by the lack of the promised "Shock and Awe" attack.

I can well imagine them saying to themselves "Was that it? It wasn't too bad - perhaps we can win after all!"

Edited to add point of post: So perhaps it is a requirement to bring things along quickly.

It's happening right now. I am listening to the airport being bombed.

They are bombing military targets with precision bombs. The airport and palaces.

Is that square tower CNN's showing in night vision a air-control tower? I've been trying without success to figure out exactly what that thing is.

By making the war shorter than it otherwise would be.

By causing a quick collpase of the government, and preferably a split between it and the army, by convincing the Iraqis who think of reistance that they're up against an overwhelming force. A one-day, or one-week bombing campaign will no doubt save many more lives than a proctracted "resist to the last man" seige of Baghdad.

It looks like one. Could be a water tower?

Could be. If they're bombing airports, I guess that would explain why it hasn't been hit yet.

I see Al Jazeera ( the arabic CNN) threw the Satellite.

A journalist who has been covering Wars for 30 years now, says that he hasn't seen anything like this before...

God save them.

All this 'shock and awe' sounds the same as 'terror' to me.
