What happened to the SP2 upgrade thread. I can't find it.

I just found a new problem.

My old laptop finally cratered. The intermittent power supply problem turned out to be caused by a spreading crack on the motherboard. RIP

Fortunately, I had it all backed up.

So I got a new toy- a very basic, lightweight Averatec 3200. AMD XP-M.

It came with XP SP1. I upgraded to SP2 before installing any software. Then I dragged out my olde Office 97 disc. (It's not on the old laptop any more and the desktop runs Star Office, but I actually like Office 97, if only for the version of Excel).

It would not install. "This software is not intended for your version of Windows" It said.

Really?

I fiddled with compatibility settings and ran "setup" from the command line- and lo!, eventually got everything but Access to run, though all the apps kept complaining about not finding specific DLLs.

OK. Start over. Restored the laptop to its factory defaults- ie removed SP2. This time, Office 97 installed perfectly from the CD.

Now can someone give me a rational explanation?
(NTFS by the way.).

Here's the SP2 thread (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=44714)

A friend of mine had the same problem and what did the trick was to install SP2 after Office 97. I think the problem is related to the udpated version of Windows installer.

Bill thinks it's time you spent money upgrading your version of Office.
