Part of the reason for parading POWs, faking surrenders, and hiding among civilians is to provoke such feelings in the opposing enemy. If the authorities can show that Americans are not accepting surrenders, or commiting atrocities, they believe they can somehow retain control and stay in power. If the Iraqi soldiers can be convinced they are going to be mistreated or killed even if they do surrender, they will continue to support the current Regime. Now we'll find out how well trained and led our troops are, and how their discipline holds. I am confident that they will perform well in the face of provocation, though there may be a few individual acts that will require legal action after the war is over.

Cruelty is a tool that can destroy the spirit and self-control of an enemy. Giving in to the temptation to payback in kind makes people sick.

I've listened to Vietnam era vets share stories regarding atrocities. In each story, something horrible happened to a buddy just prior to the incident. Years later, the pain of the death of comrades still hurts, but the pain of the atrocity at their own hands hurts many times more.

I think this is why honor is so important to most well trained soldiers. Honor is a shield that keeps a person from going nuts.
