You'd be amazed many Iraqi-no-it-alls (whether pro or anti -war) you can trip up with this question.

I saw this phone survey where over 1/2 the people got this wrong. And they were given a multiple choice. Some people picked iroquois!!???

Well do youknow the answer? NO GOOGLEING!!!!

Quick non-Google answer: Urdu is the prominent language of the many used there. Remember the Charze story? (a little THSMB inside joke there, folks)

Is it not Arabic? That seems too easy? DO the kurds and shiites speak dialects with their own names or something?

Ding ding ding! Arabic it is! To be fair there are regional dilects if you want to get picky.

Most people in the survey picked Armenian or Turkish as a wrong answer, Farsi came in 3rd.

I must admit I wasnt so sure myself. I thought arabic was to vauge an answer.

Did you know? CONFESS!!!!

I didn't know.

I was thinking Farsi, but knew that was unlikely as it is a Persian language IIRC. But it was still all I could come up with.

I should have been able to guess arabic as I had a soccer coach who spoke arabic when I was younger. He taught us a few arabic insults pertaining to a persons heritage or siblings to use during a soccer game to get opposing teams angry. (Sportsmanship, we don't need no sportsmanship).

I thought it was Farsi, too.

It looks like Farsi is pretty well confined to Iran.

"French?"

Ok, I'm not into the French bashing thing, but when something is funny, well, it's funny, good one :D

Naturally--since the Iranians are the Persians ("Iran" is the Farsi word for "Persia"). They are not particularly related, in language or ethnicity, to the Arabs.

There is sometimes confusion since Farsi WRITING uses arabic characters, in much the same way that French, German, and English are all written with the Latin alphabeth.
