I nominate:

Martyn Bedford
Giles Foden
Zadie Smith
Donna Tartt

as authors who seem to have had just that one truly great literary novel in them. I treasure their first books but each of them couldn't match up with their second book.

Should I still buy their later, lesser works?

Carson McCullers - The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Man, I can't reccomend that book highly enough. But, that's it as far as she goes.
