'Virgin Mary' sandwich sells on eBay for $28,000

Online casino gobbles up grilled cheese icon

HOLLYWOOD, Florida (AP) -- A woman who said her 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich bore the image of the Virgin Mary will be getting a lot more bread after the item sold for $28,000 on eBay.

GoldenPalace.com, an online casino, confirmed that it placed the winning bid, and company executives said they were willing to spend "as much as it took" to own the 10-year-old half-sandwich with a bite out of it.

"It's a part of pop culture that's immediately and widely recognizable," spokesman Monty Kerr told The Miami Herald. "We knew right away we wanted to have it."

I'm in the wrong business.

They ran an article about it in the local rag. A few days later, someone wrote a letter to the editor complaining about the skeptic who had the audacity to question the holy sandwich. The writer demanded the skeptic (he was from Buffalo IIRC) explain why no mold or fungus was present on the grilled cheese.

This is just plain sad.

Of course, at the same time, it makes we wonder if I should be selling equally worthless crap on ebay.
I mean, if someone is stupid enough to buy into such nonsense, why should I feel guilty when taking their money.

I would feel bad if it was a more elaborate scam, but something so simple and ridiculous!!

Yes, I suppose you are right. At the end of the day, I don't think I could swindle people out of money. It's tempting when you see a grilled cheese sandwich sell for $28,000.00 though!

Is it really a swindle if the company that bought it doesn't believe that it is a holy icon? GoldenPalace.com bought it for publicity value.

Is GoldenPalace.com the one that paid a guy to go on ice during the World Figureskating Championship with their URL on his chest a year or two back? If so, let me say they have interesting marketting methods.

Laff. Check out some of the other eBay items mocking it. Funniest one is the actual Virgin Mary statue on the toast. LoL!

Hello Kitty on toast was equally amusing.

The real publicity stunt in this whole affair is when somebody decided that the "face" belonged to the virgin Mary. When I look at that sandwich, I can clearly see a face, but it does not look like any common representation of Mary.

That is because you lack faith. Or have a brain. I'm always getting those two mixed up.

I've also heard that someone says that they have Jesus' face on a frikkin' fish stick that they're trying to auction!!

God, I hope I've heard that wrong, but for some reason, I don't think so...

Ya know, it's official: We skeptics ARE in the wrong when it comes to religious people....they buy ANYTHING!! We could make a killing in this!!

I'm surprised Jambo hasn't commented on this yet.

Good money-making scams are something he appreciates better than most.

It's a bit old...but hey, it probably wouldn't kill me, so I'd do it....

When I look at it, I wonder why Mary would wear lipstick.

Did anyone ever see The Simpsons when Homer in his sleep had conversations with God? When he had to go, God said "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go appear on a tortilla in Mexico."

This is pretty close.

Sad thing is, if a skeptic did this, they'd be all over them, admonishing them for being so callous and greedy, and just plain heartless for toying with someone's faith.

Besides, wouldn't Fundies deny it being real anyway, since this type of thing is near to idol-worship, since only Jesus and NO ONE ELSE is to be worshiped (or seen in foodstuffs, I'd gather)?

I have an idea for a new business venture.

A restaurant that sells nothing but food with pictures of religious icons on it!

It would be great!

We could but iron presses with pictures of Jesus and Mary on them. Set the presses on the grill and then push them into the food to imbed the picture.

Anyone else want to get in on this, It'll make billions in the bible belt alone.
