While on Hollidays recently in Analucia I frequently saw references to a "San Jeronimo". I have never heard of this chap before but I did see paintings and statues of said saint apparently beating his chest with a stone. Does anyone know who this nutter was or what he did? Why was be thumping himself with a stone?

I have tried googling it but just get loads of results for churches and hostels in Latin climes.

Thanks.

Try Saint Jerome (http://atheism.about.com/library/glossary/western/bldef_jerome.htm)

ETA: Here (http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/work?workNumber=NG773) you can find a small explanation of the rock vs chest thing.
