View Full Version : Do you use the ignore function?

I note that a number of people here have commented on who they have on their "ignore" list. I admit I have been tempted to use it, but so far have refrained. The one person I almost put on "ignore" (no, it was not Franko) was spamming the website by posting very long posts with the same text in each post.
I am curious as to if you use the "ignore" feature, what criteria you use or potentially would use. For me, it would not be whether the poster were abusive (though I find that irritating) but rather how much of my time it wasted in order to scroll through the posts.

I use ignore, but extremely rarely; only put Franko on it, and I haven't even seriously considered ignorin gothers.
For me, the poster's mannerisms are not of primary importance. however, if the poster makes it impossible to have a coherent conversation -- lies, stupidity, etc. -- ignore is invoked.

What happens when you use it? Is it like the ignored poster is not there at all, or do you see their name where they post, but no content?

I haven't used it, but I may consider it from time to time.
Some people who are reasonable targets of the ignore function may try to claim that to use the function is to deny them their rigt to speak, or evidence of your refusal to listen to alternatives.
I think that is nonsense. If someone is abusive to the point where I think ignoring them is a good idea, I will. There are intelligent and mature people who can present those same alternatives without being abusive, and I will listen to those people instead.

I'm tempted at times.
Profanity, lewd wording, colorful metaphors? Heck, I use 'em! (Er, HELL, I use 'em!)
People regularly directing abuse at other people.... tempting.

Either my atoms -- or the good lord -- have provided me with a highly selective "ignore" feature having to do with scroll-forward.

Amen.
I'd use the ignore function if someone were constantly posting images I found to be offensive (Sylvia Browne eating bar-b-qued chicken, for instance).

This is how I feel. I have two people ignored. Frustrating myself isn't worth it.
So, out of sight out of mind.

I just don't open any threads started by pillory or bethke. Or (in the main) by bigfig, although I sometimes take a brief look at her stuff for nostalgia's sake.
But I don't have anyone on ignore, no.

The empty space says something to the effect of "This person is on your ignore list. To read this post click here" ('here' being a hyperlink to the actual post).
I've only used the ignore feature on one poster, some troll named Zen_Bastard, but he hasn't been around these parts for some time.
I do have to admit that the flaming thread he started, titled "Fight Club," had some pretty good flames in it. It'd be a damn shame if that thread got deleted in the "day of reckoning" a few days ago.

My JREF forums experience has been a lot nicer ever since I put Franko on my ignore list.

What's this thread about? Seems to be a completely empty thread as far as I can see. :D

Darat you sound V obnoxious today??? (Just kidding)
I don't use the ignore list as I can't see the point as to why posters allow themselves to be wound up by anyone. Just tell 'em what you think or go to another thread. Also even if you have someone on ignore, there is always another poster who drags the text into theirs so you can see what your ignored poster has said anyway:cool::D

I use it liberally. I heartily recommend giving it a try. Life is too short to waste arguing with people that only want to argue.

I don't use it, but would consider it in the case that a person has an absurdly long signature.

I don't use the ignore feature, nor do I plan to. Sometimes I like to read the "extreme" point of view just to see what it is. There isn't anyone on the forums that really bothers me. Some people post stuff that gets me riled up, but usually, I stop caring within a couple minutes.
That said, my forum experience has been greatly enhanced since I disabled seeing people's signatures in the threads.

I use it pretty regularly, when I need a rest. And there are certain posters I simply find uninteresting. This may be an arrogant attitude, but --- well, thats it.

Edited to add: Yeah, long signatures. IMHO, a long signature is an act of terrorism. I just added somebody to my ignore list.

If this forum had had a FAQ folder for members I would have put there my points of view.Unfortunately it's not the case.I find useless and time consuming to explain again and again the same things to every new atheist on the forum who challenge my points of view regrading God,leprichauns, elfs, unicorns and so on...anyway it must not be forget that atheists represent a crushing majority on this forum...
Thank you all for understanding,in any case I assure you I'm still thinking whether I should delete some of the stuff on my signature...

I don't use it to block "extreme." I use it to block dull, repetitious, boring, and futile.

I'm sorry Tricky. I shall refrain from doing that in the future.
I mean I shall really try to refrain from that.

... ok you get the joke.
Yes I use it and have several people on it. the first time I put somebody on ignore was due to their not so nice PM's, when it got tedious I slapped them on ignore, since then they have been joined by those who followed the same criteria as the original one(puppets following a puppeteer commands) or when they have shown 'stalker unhinged' traits. When on ignore I simply do that, I totally ignore them.
I once took them all off ignore to see if they had moved on from their vile ways but they hadn't so they were slapped back on with a view to being their permanent.
[rant]The latest one to be joined was the idiot who PM'd me telling me to ignore me on banter with a view to making me leave, as so deemed by those who want this to happen Duh but thanks for the laugh. It only confirmed to me I was right to express my view that this behavior was wrong about the shunning troll policy that was being set up by some. Sorry people this policy and attitude sucks worse than some of the higher than me trolls.:(
This is a member board and as such all can go where they chose or not to.[end of rant]
