... I just picked it up at my bank yesterday.
Now what do I do to pay my TAM3 registration fee? What's up with PayPal (i.e. how does that work)?
And do I qualify for the 'student' membership, or do I need an actual student ID card for that (because I don't have one).

If you give Linda details of your card she'll handle it for you. She can be trusted! Ask her about the student membership. If you don' want tosend details of your card over the net, telephone her..............

I just phoned the JREF and gave them my card details (and I hope my boss doesn't find out about that ).
I didn't get Linda on the phone however, but Randi (or someone sounding very much like him :D). Do you think he can be trusted :p:D:D
So how does PayPal work anyway? Could anyone explain? so I won't be having to give shady magicians my credit card number any more :p

Mr Randi often answers the phone. He's very easy to talk to, don't you think?
Paypal - you pay them, they pay the other person into their account. They also take a cut from the receiver, and sometimes that gets passed on to you.

Although I would probably have wondered why the phone number listed on the site as "Linda" would be answered by a guy with Randi's voice, especially if I'd never heard Randi before (which would have been the case about a year ago).
I'm also curious how much my 1 minute phone call to florida actually cost :D

Bud, forgive me, I haven't lived in Europe since Helmut Schmidt was German Chancellor (of the FRG), but how the hell does one exist without a credit card? I don't mean in the American sense of having 5 or 10 and running each of them to the max to keep our Potemkin economy thriving*, but things like renting cars, booking hotel rooms and making major purchases?
And why did you pick it up at your bank? Are you sure it wasn't a Debit card, which is a totally different fiduciary creature than a creadit card? All of my credit cards (all 6 active ones) came in the mail.
Phone communication with Linda (I've never got Randi) is totally safe, as is PayPal. For PayPal, just register a user ID and your card number and you can easily make donations and payments over the Internet. If you ever get an e-mail from Ma$t3r_C@rd.com requesting you send them your account number for verification - delete it immediately.
* Damn, that should be Language nomination worthy

Yeah, you SHOULD have talked to Kitten. Mind you then your phone bill might have been a bit more pricey!

You can do quite a lot with cash. Where that fais there is the cheque book (although I only use that because £1000 is slightly more than I am happy carrying around).

I don't question the value of cash, but I've grown to love my Debit card since it has replaced about 80% the checks I wrote previously. I also would never carry around $1600 in cash unless I was spending on heck of a night at the strip club.
The last big purchase I made with my credit card apart from TAM hotels, airfare and fees was a $2000 computer and monitor. If I'm going to make an over $100 purchase on something that might take a month or two to pay off... it goes on the credit card.

It's a Mastercard actually, but it's linked to my bank account. Whatever I charge to it will be taken from my account at the start of the next month, and my limit is slightly less than my monthly paycheck, so there's no risk for the bank in case I go nuts, just for me in case I spend my limit and my entire paycheck is gone at thge start of the month.
I bought my first car with a bank deposit (I had to bring the bank statement as proof that I'd actually made the deposit). My second car just required a cash downpayment and was paid of monthly. Other than that, my appartment's security deposit was paid cash, and my Japanese training sword was also paid cash. My sword was actually the most cash I ever carried around (900€), and I didn't even have to pay that much, since I got a 20% reduction. I don't recall ever having needed big amounts of cash exceeding more than 150€-200€.
I did buy an armour online this summer, for which I asked a friend to use his credit card while I paid him back with a bank deposit.
