On a work laptop(A Compaq with touchpad and two buttons on the touchpad- ie no mouse) I found that a left button single or double click opened the "Search"window rather than opening or exploring the relevant folder.
Right clicking brought up a menu with "Search"Highlighted on top.
The Mouse settings in Control Panel were absolutely standard.
I finally removed the settings by using Explorer, Tools, Folder options and resetting all the defaults.
I'm curious though. How had the touchpad buttons been reset in the first place, as they appeared normal in Control Panel?

Late answer, but I just saw this. It's a bug in XP. If you ever mess with the "Folder Options" - "File types" settings, which let you choose what programs to open which types of files, you'll see that the default for the "File Folders" type is set to "Find", which it should not be. If anything "taps" this value, such as just looking at it (sort of like the observer changing the observed in quantum physics), it will actually SET your defaults to "Search" instead of "Open". What "tapped" your settings, I couldn't say, though commonly switching your folders to open on single click instead of double click can do it.. In any case, I'm glad you were able to fix it with resetting the defaults; most times, one actually has to go into the Windows registry (dangerous turf) to get it back to opening folders by default instead of searching them. Hope this helps!

Thanks. Do you happen to know which registry keys are involved?
