Carlo Urbani, the scientist who discovered the first clue that a dangerous new microbe was beginning to spread around the globe, succumbed yesterday in a Bangkok hospital bed to the frightening disease he alerted the world to.
Any doctors on the forum want to comment about this? Have you received any information on this deadly form of pneumonia? It seems to me that more attention needs to be paid to this epidemic. I think the networks should be giving more coverage to this story. Comments anyone? Educate me!

There's been a couple threads on this already in Banter.
I would say the media is giving it too much attention, considering the small number of cases to date.
Here's a thread (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=16480) with a couple informational links about it, including one from the CDC.
Here's a thread (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=16484&highlight=SARS) where I suggest the ridiculous acronym SARS be replaced by naming the disease for Urbani, the WHO doctor credited with 'discovering' the disease.

Last I heard about SARS is that it has a fatality rate of about 3-4%, high, but not awful.
Personally I'd hate to have the media give this more attention, it'd likely cause undue panic. I'm sure it will become THE big story, more than the war, if it continues to spread and looks like a pandemic. Until then I hope it continues to be quietly handled by the medical community.

I heard that authorities are warning people who have intentions of travelling to S/E Asia not to go unless it's necessary. Apparently if, on your return flight, you have flu like symptoms you won't be allowed on the plane for fear of spreading whatever you might have to fellow passengers.

Seems the number of new cases is falling and that there will be no epidemic.
[BTW, Alfie, the missus didn't need to be put out, she stayed out. I left my window open but alas.....]

LOL BJ!!
Did she eventually come home??
I've just seen an ABC news report saying that in Singapore (I think) have quarantined an apartment block because of it. Men in white protective suits crawling all over the place. But I feel the media are making a big thing out of it.

Well, not really, but they didn't feel safe to drive back till morning. That was her story anyway.

Sorry Bill but I'm probably old enough to be your big sister therefore I am past bikini wearing age;)
One day I may figure out how to get an avatar but it's all too hard.
Hey, you are the story teller around here, not me. Besides your stories are much more entertaining than anything I could tell:)

AF- I had assumed bikinis were sort of leftovers from clothes production- the bits they left on the floor after making real clothes. Never dawned on me that people actually designed them. Bit like a suspension bridge in engineering terms, I suppose. I daresay there must be underpant designers too. Good grief! Do you suppose they have test departments? Civilisation is more complex than I had imagined.
OK. I'm not really a clothes person. I'm more interested in what's inside a bikini than what's on the outside. Once nearly did myself an injury putting on a climbing sling. I haven't been able to face a pair of thongs* since.
*Or is a thong thingular??

LOL!
"A pair of thongs" is something totally different to "a thong".
A pair of thongs you wear on your feet and a thong is what you wear on your-----yeech! I hate those things. They would have to be the worse fashion accessory ever invented.
Hey, I could design and make thongs to sell to the public along with my bikinis and swimwear.
Thanks SS you have given me a good idea;)

IT says here that 'SARS' may be more severe in China because the virus is teaming up with another infection - chlamydia.
This might explain why it has not been as deadly in the U.S.

If that is true, if we get it here in Australia, it could quite likely wipe out our entire Aboriginal population.

They're claiming they now have the virus identified, it's a coronavirus.
Also, it seems they will name it after Urbani, which is no surprise.
