View Full Version : HELP!!!! Word toolbars have disappeared
TruthSeeker

I opened Word this morning and there are no toolbars, only a ruler along the top.
I've tried troubleshooting toolbars but each option involves clicking on toolbars...the whole problem in that I don't have any toolbars to click on.
The tech people at work are "stumped" and will get back to me by the end of the day. Right.
Anybody know how I can restore my toolbars?
eta: or at least, do you know the shortcut to enable "track changes" so I can get some work done. The shortcuts I know all seem to be working.
Thanks

What happens when you pull down the View>Toolbars menu? Do you have a list of toolbars? And if you do, then none of them work?

Oh...maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing. I don't have any menus, so can't pull down "View"
sorry. I'm bad at this stuff.

Okay, you don't have any pulldown menus? Things like File View Tools across the top of the screen?

My hubby says it sounds like you are in full screen mode. What version of Word are you running?

Try going all the way up to the top and left click at the very top of the screen, where you would expect the menus to be. See if something shows up.

the "page setup" window opens

Try holding down Alt, then press " - " (between the zero and the equal sign on the keyboard). If that pulls up a little menu in the top left, click on "Restore".

that made the display smaller (about 2/3 of the screen)

Try clicking and dragging at the top of the screen. Drag down. See if something shows up.

that gave me a "split screen" display but neither one has any menus

Try Alt + V and see if you get a pulldown menu.

What happens if you open up a document stored on your hard drive? Not from Word, but from your documents folder.

Try renaming your normal.dot file & reopen word.

Alt + tab switches between programs, BTW.

Personally, I wouldn't try renaming files if you don't know a lot about computers. Let the tech people handle it or you could try calling Microsoft. I'm stumped.

Yeah, that sort of scares me and I have to leave in 15 minutes anyway.
I guess if everyone remains stumped, they can just reinstall Word, right?
Lisa, Anathema, ShowMe...thanks so much for your help. I really do appreciate it.

Reinstalling Word would probably be easiest. Sorry I couldn't help more. :(

You were, as always, the ultimate in fabulousness.
I jinxed myself by telling someone just two days ago how well behaved my laptop is. :D

Strangely, my Word just did the exact same thing. But when I shut it down and reopened it, it worked fine. Try that, or restarting your whole computer. And that's the end of my advice.

Have a gander HERE (http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissngMenusEtc.htm)
It's apparently a known problem. I can walk you through it, if you need a handholding --- my palms hardly sweat at all any more ;)

OMG!!!!! IT WORKED!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you :)
I will be sending that link to our tech staff, if you don't mind.
And this, in no way, implies that I do not want to hold your hand but that's for another thread.

Fantastic! BTW, are you on a Mac or Windows...and which procedure fixed the problem?
Can we skip when we hold hands too? I've always wanted to skip, but just never find an occasion...

Windows 2000
I typed winword.exe /a into the run window and that took care of it.
Of course we will skip. I thought that went without saying.

OK...someone with photoshop put Hendrix and my cranky monkey on Pooh and Tigger.. :D
I reported to the tech guys, by the way. They were very impressed except for the *%&@#($@ who felt the need to remind me that it is against policy to get help from "outside sources"
I very politely told him that I pay $225/mo/computer for tech support and they were completely unable to help me but that generous folks on a message board helped me for free and fixed it. Perhaps the hospital admin who agreed to this situation would like to know about this. That shut him up.

And...BAM! :D
Hey, TS - you're don't seem to be the shy little thing you were when you first joined this forum a while back! Way to go!
PS. When's this Oz trip you have been mentioning?

Thanks Zep. That means alot to me. I've been working a great deal on these issues so your comment is wonderful.
Oz..August...long way off. The conference is in Sydney but I'm hoping to travel around a bit. I will definitely be asking for travel tips and, if possible, meetings in pubs. :D

OK, when you get closer to the time, give me a few weeks' notice and I'll see what I can do about rounding up a few familiar names. I'd like to meet a few more of them myself, actually!
