View Full Version : What should I know?

I just lashed out madly and bought a second-hand HP Jornada 430se. It looks like it should be fun, but as I've never used a palmtop PC before, I wondered if anyone had any advice like "don't pour coffee into it", or any recommendations of programs to get for it (it's running windows CE 2.11).
Thankyou.

Not to be used as a life-saving device

Pour coffee into it, and buy a (insert name of favorite rival palmtop here).

Do not use it near a suphuric acid-throwing machine!
External use only.
Advice unlike that might include checking http://www.pocketpcsoft.net/

Keep Jornada's well charged up because after 72 hours of no battery (I think) they reset themselves and all your data is lost. This applies to most of the PDA's I've seen.
Backup the data to a PC also.
Other than that I've had no problems with the Jornada.

I've got an Axim X5. Games I'd recommend are Warfare Inc (RTS) and Snails (Worms clone). Spend some time playing with the operating system too - pretty-much everything you need is there.

... this, combined with a battery life that makes a mayfly seem like Methuselah makes them an utter, utter pain in the backside, and a total liability to boot.
I got around this problem by investing in an SD card, and getting Sprite backup to run when the power drops to a few percent. You can then recover directly from the SD card without having to resync the device.
Completely unnecessary in my view, and it's enough to ensure I never buy another Pocket PC once this one dies.
Edited to add: Er, sorry, you probably didn't want to hear that, since you've just bought one. Ignore the whinging but take the SD advice...

Don't spill even a drop of dichloromethane on it.

Nobody said "don't drop it, not even a short distance like if it falls out of your pocket".
Now it's broken.
I don't believe this. :(
Technically, I could use it, if I could remember exactly where everything appears on the screen, because I think it's receiving input, just not producing any output (i.e. the screen is blank).
Thank God for my sense of humour.

If it works again, Smike, I got some useful stuff from Tucows (http://easynet.pda.tucows.com/index.html)

This has changed to the:
101 used for a dead Jornada 430se thread.
* Hi-tech coaster.
* Weapon to hurl at annoying JREF threads (not this one of course).
* Handy battery drainer.
* Photo frame.....

If there is no obvious damage to the screen, try opening it up and checking to see if a ribbon cable has come loose. You might be lucky and effect a simple repair.
What have you got to lose?

Yeah, I'll try that over the weekend. Otherwise I'll try and sell the bits on eBay. It came with Outlook 2000, so I should be able to get something for that, the other stuff is a matter of finding someone with a working version and selling them the accessories.

Richard. I agree totally . Last year I bought an IPAQ 1940. Three months later I sold it for half price. I was happy to be rid of it. At work I need to recharge it daily, which meant carrying a transformer and a 2-socket Euro to UK adapter that could plug into local sockets and take the British plug. I reverted to the psion5 for note-taking. (2 x AA cells give about a week of use) and bought a new laptop, for heavy processor work.
One gadget too far.
