From Charles Bremner in Paris

FRANCE complained to Libya yesterday after Colonel Gaddafi’s son, Hannibal, allegedly beat up a woman in a Paris hotel, scuffled with police, brandished a gun and falsely claimed diplomatic immunity.

HANNIBAL QUADDAFI????????

With a name like that, I'm not surprised...

Why? I see nothing to do with elephants, crossing the alps or being an impressivly good militry leader. His actions are not at all in keeping with namesake.

He's in Denmark right now, studying at the University of Copenhagen.

Under very close scrutiny.

Reaching back into grade school history here, but wasn't Hannibal (the Punic Wars one, not the cannibal one) Carthaginian? And wasn't Carthage on the northern Africa coast somewhere? Maybe in/near Libya?

Ah, here it is. Pretty close to Libya, anyway.

A little profiling maybe?

Well, considering how smug Claus was about how one could never be arrested in Denmark without a very good reason, I find it ironic that he lets borderline harassment go by without a word of protest.

Ah, the liberating power of European doublespeak. Kind of like the way "God" invalidates the entire constitution, but a state-mandated religion is perfectly kosher in Denmark.

If they don't have a minister of irony, I think it's high time they got one.

Not at all. They know who he is, after all. And he's not exactly a run-of-the-mill foreign student.

I'm surprised that Denmark engages in such racist profiling.

True, but neither are the people the US keeps under scrutiny run-of-the-mill people.

However, when that was claimed by the Americans as an explanation, it was brushed aside as racist paranoia.

Excuse me?

We are not talking about racist profiling. We are talking about the son of a foreign head of state, who is under investigation for various things.

Save the knee-jerk reactions, please.
