I heard on the radio today (BBC Radio 4) that 1 in 4 Afro Americans can expect to spend time behind bars.

To me it seems abnormally high.

Just wondered is this statistic accurate, and what are the statistics for other racial groups? also any ideas as to the reasons why?

and whatever you do, don't be racist and try to help them get to uni instead. jail costs just as much, but is more appropriate.

Sadly, this is true. As a result of the severe social and economic inequalities in the USA, a disproportionately hign number of Americans of African descent are forced into this cruel situation. Some are lucky enough to work in top-class night clubs, while others must earn a mere pittance in low dives and pick-up joints. Yes, the sad plight of Afro-American bartenders sullies us all.

CS: You may wish to review these statistics (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/correct.htm); perhaps they might be helpful.

African-Americans do spend more time in jail than other Ameicans and I don't know the details but I probably will when I look at that link that Wolverine put up (how does he come up with these things?) but let say something about the wording of what you (Cap Snort) wrote. You talked about "spending some time behind bars." I don't know if that is exactly what the BBC said or not but note that that is a pretty liberal interpretation of being in trouble with the law. I mean, one incident that results in four hours behind bars counts by that definition.
