Any one know if this is true? I found this when reading the
Derek Acorah web site. I googled and could not find any other reference to this happening. Anyone have a clue as to what this is all about?

from Dereks site:
"In July 1999 Derek was back in Hollywood for the official launch of Ghosts of England and Ghosts of Belgrave Hall at the Vogue Theater. He was also to take part in the ISPR's challenge to James Randi, details of which can be obtained from the ISPR (http://www.derekacorah.org/aboutme.html) site." I can't find anything on there though.

Did the ISPR get serious (the pic) or just rattle their sabres (the quote)?

The story as I've heard it is as follows:
Derek Acorah and the ISPR were in correspondence with Randi. They proposed stopping his heart at midnight on Millenium's eve.
When queried as to what would consitute a pass the ISPR stated that any deviation from a normal regular heartbeat would be sufficient. Obviously the prospect of a 70+yr old experiencing a deviation from its normal rate is hardly evidence of the paranormal. Randi suggested that they demonstrate this ability of a fit guy in his mid-20's any be a bit more specific about the effect. All communication then ceased and Acorah/ISPR never actually submitted a formal application for the challenge.
I did ask Derek Acorah's wife about it on the LivingTV channel, a couple of years ago, she declined to comment beyond saying "The Randi challenge isn't what it appears to be" or words to that effect.

I used to be a medic in the Coast Guard, and I gave a lot of physical exams, including EKGs, to a *lot* of men in excellent condition. The occasional irregularity in *anyone's* heartbeat is not at all uncommon.

And conversely, I had a small heart attack a couple of years ago, but my EKG looked just fine in the ambulance and the ER; took some blood enzyme tests to confirm it.
Hey, if ISPR/Derek wants another crack at the challenge, I'll be happy to serve as their guinea pig.
But let's make it sporting. They have to do more than just make my heartbeat irregular. They have to stop it. Not permanently, mind you - just for, say one or two seconds (and I won't insist on having a cardiologist or an ER team there). If they win, they get a million bucks.
But if they lose, they pay me $100,000 for my time and trouble, plus my expenses.
You know where to find me. Put up or shut up.

I think you would have to search realy, realy hard to find anyone in the western culture, who had at the specific time, a hearbeat, that is not different from the hearbeat one has during a boring medical inspection.

You have never had your heart rate checked during a prostate exam have you?

Actually this is great. Why aren't we circulating this more?
Derek is implying that he or ISPR took the JREF challenge.
Everyone knows that no-one has passed the preliminaries and the Million Dollars are still with the JREF.
So Derek Acorah and the ISPR are clearly connecting themselves with a failed challenge attempt.
Good for them.
