President Bush was concerned "his mistakes as a youth" would disqualify him from running for the nation's highest office, said an old friend who secretly recorded private conversations in which Bush appears to acknowledge past drug use.


"I don't want any kid doing what I tried to do 30 years ago," Bush said in recordings made when he was governor of Texas and aired Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America.""And I mean that. It doesn't matter if it's LSD, cocaine, pot, any of those things, because if I answer one, then there will be another one. And I just am not going to answer those questions. And it may cost me the election."


The recordings were made by Doug Wead.



HAW! have you heard the recordings made by Bushs "buddy". What douche. Im no Bush fan but recording teh dude and then blabbing about it is a weak thing to do to your friend.

back to teh pot smoking. I think its funny. To me its no big deal, but I know thier are lots of conservatives who hammered Clinton for the same thing.

Look I abhor Bush, but to revisit a basically victim less crime from 30 years ago to exhibit the man's ability to lead and govern is pointless. I have more then enough REAL reasons to recognize the man's short comings and don't need a silly pot story to point them out. Hell the guy was a drunk too, but he stopped. Much ado about nothing. I thought it was pretty common knowledge Bush had a pretty wild past. Republican's didn't care and the conservative media were, as they seem to do, trying to bend over backwards showing their not liberal, never paid much attention to it.

Why the hyperbole in the headline? Does Bush use the word "love" in these recordings? He did some pot, he (sensibly) comments that he does not want to be a reason why youngsters try pot. He does not brag about his drug use. I see no big issue here.

I'll even agree that Doug was a bit of an a-hole to release secretly made recordings.

It was nice to see a moral reason to stay silent offered first, before slipping into the inevitable pragmatic reasons. Not bad for a first impulse, I reckon.

I have no problem with Bush smoking pot in his "youth". Heck, I hope he tried all the illegal drugs available at that time. I'm sure anyone who smoked pot (and inhaled deeply), should be allowed to run for president and win 2 terms.

I also believe, since they have first-hand knowledge of the "evil" effects of marijuana, they should get behind some legislation to allow adults to grow it, smoke it, and not be criminalized.
