My favorite nutty TV preacher died Monday of stroke at 75.
Details here (http://www.macleans.ca/culture/news/shownews.jsp?content=e022217A).
Different from the more common used-car-salesman type of TV preacher, Scott was a sometimes crotchety old man expounding on the meaning of the bible, broadcast seemingly 24 hrs a day via TV and shortwave radio from Los Angeles. His TV broadcasts were sometimes a bit surreal, with extreme closeups of his face covered with the white beard and sunglasses. His meandering thoughts sometimes suggested he was a bit inebriated, with frequent breaks showing his horses and pop music. A little bit of local (and indeed worldwide) weirdness has been lost.

Here's a nice overview of the wackiness of Dr. Gene Scott. (http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/religion/dr-gene-scott/)
And when it came to donations he asked for, he was sometimes straightforward (http://www.boarsheadtavern.com/cgi-bin/comm.cgi?entry_id=27014) about where it went. :p

Oh my god! I used to watch him as a student at U-Mich some 20 years ago, way late at night, just for giggles. He was some bizarre combo of religion and patriotism, more the latter than the former. He had a watercolor of "pissants" ants marching around. They played some song while the camera closely followed the painted trail of marching ants. He was on some pissant rant that night.
They'd do super closeups of his face, which wasn't too cool because sometimes he'd pick his nose =(
I tried to find him on the Internet, or any info, a few months ago, just to see what happened to him, but I couldn't remember his name, and "crazy TV preacher with white beard" didn't turn up too much. =D

Whoa! I watched him while I was in Ann Arbor from 87-90! Small world.

Wow, this guy used to be a telivision staple at The GM's house. Always entertaining, if off his rocker. He was obviously intelligent, witty, and occasionally perverse. Of all the TV preachers, I liked him best. RIP indeed.

The late night short wave bands will never be the same...

I used to watch Scott. He used to brag about blowing donations on horses and other material things. He used to punish his parishioners when they did not donate enough by refusing to preach and only playing music on his telecast.
It would be wrong to celebrate anyones death.... I might make an exception in Scott's case.

He definitely seemed like someone to go drinking beer with. But then again, so are Clinton, Bush Jr., and Al Sharpton, so I guess that's not saying much.
