The Lampe Berger is presently being marketted in India, also.

It claims to kill 70% of bacteria in the air within an hour of lighting it. Is it true?

Are there any reliable studies conducted, as to its effectiveness?

70%???

This is 99.9% effective (http://www.lysol.com/solutionsfinder.shtml)

And it comes in 7 scents. :D

(Edit to add: I like Green Apple scent)

(Edited again to add: http://www.heroesandlegacies.com/lamps/ sounds like WOO tech from the early part of the 1900s.)

(Edited again to add this official history:
http://www.lampeberger.fr/versionanglaise/entreprisegb.htm Er, what claims?)

I'm not sure I'd want formalin in the air I breathe. Nor do I think killing all the bacteria in a room is necessary or desireable.
