Captor and captive talked, and he untied her. He looked at her family photos, she read to him from the Bible and ``The Purpose-Driven Life,'' and cooked him a breakfast of pancakes and eggs.
-snip-
She asked him, she said, if he believed in miracles. ``You got out of that courthouse with police everywhere, and you don't think that's a miracle?'' Smith said. ``You don't think you're supposed to be sitting right here in front of me. . . . Your miracle could be that you need to be caught for this. If you go to prison, then you need to share the word of God with all the prisoners there.''

So once again, gunman kills 4 people; not God's fault. Gunman gives up; All praise and glory to God!
It just gets sillier and sillier.

Wait a minute. Did she actually claim that it was a "miracle" that he was able to whack 4 people and still get out of the building so he could pull off a carjacking or two, and then go to her house and hold her hostage?
Praise Jesus!!!????
Now, had the damn gun backfired and blew his friggin face off, then I might be more inclined to accept the "devine intervention" nonsense.

Could be. But then again, I am very concerned about the type of person who would fall for such an idiotic scheme.

You gotta give the lady a hell of a lot of credit for keeping her head screwed on through the whole thing. Making him pancakes was probably the first nice thing anyone's done for him in a long time; might have saved her life.

So, if you are cornered by a gunman, do you start with the God talk? Or do you stick to principles and proclaim your proud atheism?
Me? I'll do the thing that keeps me alive....so I might have to brush up on that 2,000 year old boring novel...you know, just in case!
Some things are way too stupid to die over.

hmmmm...cause: "and cooked him a breakfast of pancakes and eggs."
effect: he surrendered!
IHOP should find a way to work this into their next ad campaign.
"I was going to kill my boss for laying me off last week but I had the Rutti Tutti Fresh and Fruity pancakes and sent him a thank you note instead."
Maybe they could use that Jared guy.

God exists. He is all-powerful and all-knowing. This is why he must be brought to justice for the horrible crimes that he has caused and allowed to happen.
He should be arrested, tried for crimes against humanity, and executed.

-z Captured by a guy who just killed a handful of people, I would be more than happy to pray with or for him if I thought it was a way to save myself. I would even pray to Odin and Tor if he was so inclined, why not?

The power of God is the ability to talk anyone into anything with zero evidence.
It's EXACTLY what you'd use in that circumstance. After all, he had every logical reason not to do what she was telling him to do.
I hope they fry him.

Not really. Although I would say my statement is more about society in general. How bad is it that we have a situation where someone could pull a "God performed a miracle by letting you get out of the building alive after killing 4 people" story and actually have someone take it seriously?

He's got a good point! ;)
But don't worry...God works in mysterious ways! As in, it's a mystery why anyone subscribes to this crap.

I guess my problem was that you are "very concerned about the type of person who would fall for such an idiotic scheme." I can think a lot of reasons to be concerned about the guy, and falling for miracle-talk ain't one of them.
My new problem is that this guy's instability (as evidenced by his falling for miracle talk, not apparently by his 3-day bondage/sodomy/rape fest and sneaking a shiv into court followed by his multiple-homocide rampage) becomes more a statement about society in general.
Bizarre...

Do you think that she used this miracle argument because she knew he was incredible instable and would fall for it? Or do you think she went for it because we live in a society wherein such loopy concepts are actually considered?
His actions say plenty about him as an individual. I still say her use of the miracle claim says more about society in general.

How about the possibility that she used it because she's genuinely devout? And he went for it because he was tired and scared and not thinking too clearly?
Occam.

That's scary. The guy is horrid, but at least he is the victim of a manhunt. She, OTOH, is being considered a hero.

Now that she's saved his soul, love will blossom. It will start with letters exchanged from prison, a discrete marriage witnessed by the warden a year from now, and he will continue his prison ministry for a dozen years or so (with occasional conjugal visits) until his execution.
I see a script for Lifetime in this.

Only if he gets out, moves in with her (Judith Light) and her troubled adolescent children, and a series of murders occurs in the neighborhood. Judith fights for her man despite her own doubts about him, but in a shocking plot twist, it turns out her son is the killer, not her convict husband. There will be a lot of crying and walking around holding the kid's old teddy bear, and it will fail miserably in the ratings despite being the lead-in to The Golden Girls, and being aired right after The Golden Girls.

A center that trains people in how to survive a hostage situation is also interested in her story for part of its training...Emphasis mine.

You've been watching too much of the Women in Distress channel. I don't know if this fits the profile. Afterall, the dangerous man is not actually an (ex-) husband/boyfriend.

Is that as compared to the stalked for a Lifetime channel, or the made up History Channel, or the woowoo Discovery Channel?

Seems like warm reading to me......
Southern black guy, young enough to remember going to those Bible thumping sermons with Grandma. Probably strong females in his early life, authority figures. Probably pretty conflicted. Offer God as a way out.

Maybe the thread titel (God wins again!) was to the point after all, NY Times has a story today with this:
Dr. John MacArthur, a theologian and broadcaster who is president of the Master's College and Seminary, an evangelical institution in Santa Clarita, Calif., said, "It's an incredibly wonderful story of how God used a broken lady to stop a guy who could have killed again and again."
But Dr. MacArthur cautioned against interpreting the incident as an "unfolding of God's plan," because no one really knew enough about the two people, what really happened between them and whether they truly committed themselves to God. Wonderful story?
