Anyone have the statistics for how often crop circles appear in different countries? It is rather strange that if they are paranormal or otherworldly in origin, their creators pay so much attention to national boundries.

Interesting point.
I bet we find extremely few crop circles in countries with famine. Either aliens are very considerate or hoaxers prefer to eat than to play pranks.

Not only that, but in the UK they avoided making crop circles while there were government orders in place restricting access to fields and public footpaths in the countryside during the Foot and Mouth outbreak.
Not so oddly, crop circles began appearing in counties practically immediately after each county lifted the countryside access bans.
As for stats, www.cropcircleresearch.com has a pretty good database on worldwide circle appearances. I've done some simple analyses of my own to show that the FMD breakout in the UK had an effect on the timing of circles' appearance that year.
Richard, if there is any number crunching of the database you might like to see, you've got a volunteer over here. I've got some basic timing charts (http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/ehocking@btinternet.com/my_photos) to back up a discussion I had on usenet on sci.skeptics on the subject, where I also refuted the cropcircleresearch author's article on distribution (http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/distribution.html) where he attempts to prove that FMD had NO affect on crop circle emergence in the UK that year.

The National Geographic Channel had a great new documentary on crop circles the other night. They interviewed and followed a few groups of crop circle artists--the ones who are making all the frickin' crop circles. One incident that was both revealing and disturbing, was that during one of the artists' crop circle making sessions, they were harassed and even pelted with large stones by a crowd of believers and had to quit working. This "mystery" is now so debunked it's no more a mystery than spray paint grafitti on concrete walls. Because that's all it is, a form of artistic grafitti.

Stay tuned here for this summer's new circles. They get better every year.
