View Full Version : What [schism] would Jesus want?

I was listening today to a story about the struggles in the Episcopal Church in the US -- churches splitting off from the denomination due to a number of theological debates which been simmering for years, culminating in the ordination (if that's the right word) of a gay bishop.
Anyway, one pastor of a church going independent made a statement to the effect that "Christ would obviously want the church to stay unified, but..."
As I thought about that I wondered, would he? It seems to me that Jesus was not in favor of organized religion, or at least he was mostly silent on the subject. Does the whole idea of a capital-D Denomination come from Paul's efforts to keep in touch with multiple sects spread over several countries?

Isn't the pretty much most of of organized religion, churches, tax exemptions, popes, cardinals, bishops, priests, public prayer, prosletyzing, church doctrine, church wealth, and so forth the result of Scripture being tortuously interpreted by Man, and not the exact words of God or Jesus?

I really doubt that Jesus (if he were a real person), would recognize himself as founder of today's Christianity.

I think he'd be insulted by it.

I think he'd be insulted by it. Wouldn’t that depend on the percentage they cut him in for?

Well, since nobody would recognize him, it would be zero. Even if they did, they'd have no reason to pay him.

Not only would they not recognize him, they'd stereotype him as a muslim terrorist.

Not Muslim. They'd catagorize him as a Judaic extremist. :) And I think that c4ts is correct - he'd be really unhappy with Christianity as it is today.
