View Full Version : Arab Reporting of Iraq Conflict

Not asking or offering to debate anything here, but I was wondering how the Arabic news organizations are reporting Iraqi citizen celebration of Saddam's overthrow. On western news sources, I see articles and TV reports showing Iraqis pulling down statues of Saddam, thanking coalition forces, etc, but I wonder how these things are being reported by the Arab world. It seems like they were harping on the notion that Iraqi citizens did not want this war, so what are they saying now? Same thing? Change their tune? No comment?

Thanks a lot in advance for any information on this topic, and I'd like to kindly ask that no rhetoric be used in this thread.

Here's the Al Jazeera version of the fall of Basra. (http://english.aljazeera.net/topics/article.asp?cu_no=1&item_no=2079&version=1&template_id=277&parent_id=258) The site is pretty unstable though, I hear it's getting hacked frequently.

I can't get the above link to work, I don't think you can link to that page. So here's the Al Jazeera front page (english version) (http://english.aljazeera.net/topics/index.asp?cu_no=1&lng=0&template_id=1&temp_type=44), you can click on the Basra story from there.

My three favorite Arabic/English newspapers are as follows:

arabicnews.com (http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/)

albawaba.com (http://www.albawaba.com/main/index.ie.php3?lang=e)

arabnews.com (http://www.arabnews.com) This one is easily my favorite. I check their headlines daily, also I make it a point to see M. Kahil’s cartoons daily. His cartoons, I feel, give me some insight that even the news stories do not. Even though I am annoyed and confused by many of them, I can’t stop looking!

Who knows if these English dailies are equivalent to their Arabic counter parts? I don’t…I can’t read backwards and squiggly.

Thanks for the links, guys. Interesting stuff. I was sort of looking specifically for any Arabic news stories about Iraqis celebrating the fall of Saddam and the arrival of western military, as western sources have reported. Just curious, really.

Thanks again.
