The 600,000-dollar kitchen or why the UN is still relevant to the US
Wed Apr 2, 1:32 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States will pay 600,000 dollars to renovate the kitchen at the residence of the US ambassador to the United Nations in a sign the world body may be relevant to Washington despite the imbroglio over Iraq.

Officials said Wednesday the State Department has approved the expenditure at the request of the envoy, John Negroponte, who had asked for the funds to remodel and expand the kitchen at the apartment in New York's famed Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

"Yeah, it's a lot of money, but it's a lot of work and it's worth it," said one department official, who like the others, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Oh don't you understand? He had to expand the kitchen so that the 2 extra gourmet chefs he hired would have enough room to cook (hah like the Ambassador cooks for himself) ;)

I love that quote "Yeah, it's a lot of money, but it's a lot of work and it's worth it,". Gee I feel better now...it's worth it...mutha f*#%@in ...

P.S.
I have a toilet just like that JJ

$600,000 for a kitchen? In an apartment? I do kitchen remodeling, don't think we've ever done one for more than $60,000 - and that was w/ custom-made oak doors, oak crown mouldings, oak floor, oak trim, stainless steel appliances, marble counter tops, oak cabinets, new electric, new windows, etc. And this was in a bona-fide 120 yr. old mansion. I'd love to see a pic of what $600,000 gets you! But $$ is no object when it's paid for by the taxpayer.

The one in my avatar is in our guest bathroom. I guess they aren't as uncommon as I thought.

Do you know how to seal the lower flush-tube joint? Ours leaks, despite my being pretty proficient with plumbing myself.

Wow, I've just ordered a kitchen for 15000$ and that was about the most expensive one that was available in this size. 600000$???
Gold plated floors and walls?

Negroponte, who succeeds such renowned US diplomats as Henry Cabot Lodge, Adlai Stevenson, Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Madeleine Albright (news - web sites) in the UN post as well as the Waldorf residence, had complained that the 10- by 17-foot (three- by five-meter) kitchen was simply too small to accommodate the needs of guests at the multitude of functions he hosts, the officials said.

Guess they have the same problem at parties every one else does, all the guest congregate in the kitchen. Makes sense to enlarge it then.
